| looking for hotel I used the map from gwcc site to try to locate hotel within "walking distance" of venue.
Westin Peachtree looks ok but then checking on tripadvisor saw that 2 reviews said neigborhood was "seedy" Is there such a diff between Marriot and Hyatt and Westin as far as location...?
What about area around Holiday Inn, Wyndham Atlanta, Hampton Inn?
Help please with suggestions on where to stay. Want to come with family including 3 year old; willing to spend a little more for nice place.
Thanks

| Silver. If you pick the westin your pretty good off. The hotel is nice, and the neighborhood is a business/wholesale commercial area. If you've got the money to spend I would say go with the Westin.

Given MARTA and everything that's in and around the GWCC, I'm thinking that most fencers who come to Atlanta for the Nationals will comfortably be able to do without a rental car (depending on how far away from the metro area you want to go for sightseeing.) There are tons of things to do near the GWCC, including a tour of CNN's Headquarters. I think all of the tourist stuff was discussed in a previous thread. | Coming from a fencer who has never been to Atlanta to get information about this has been dificult. I will be traveling with several adults and responsible for several under age juniors, as the organizer. We are currently booked at the Sheraton and it looks like it's only about a block away from the host hotel. Is this true? If so, is it safe enough to walk around the area? I did see there were several malls near by and of course some very nice museums and cultural stuff accesible by MARTA. Our focus is fencing, but of course want the kids to have something to do after events are done.
Although we are from Anchorage, most of us (adults) aren't originally from here, so hopefully I don't sound too naive, but I have to make sure parents are comfortable with this cost saving method. We rented a van for JO's this year and it was a collasal waste of money in rental and parking. Would like to avoid having to rent two vans (as would be necessary for the size of this group). |

| I have stayed at the Westin Peachtree - nice hotel, not next door to the venue but within walking distance, even dragging fencing gear, and the area is no seedier than most of the other downtowns I have been to for fencing tournaments. Try the revolving restaurant on top, or at least go up to take in the view from the observation level. The other hotels in that area are also fine. |

| For those interested ... the Atlanta Braves have scheduled a home game every day from July 1 - July 9 just for this event (jk). |

| My coach is going and has agreed to go shopping for me if I provide her with a list (Canadian $ being almost at par and all...).
Which vendors are likely to be there??? Does anyone know? Or at least where a list might be posted?
Also does anyone know of any deals being offered?

Pretty much everyone with few exceptions (HOM and other smallish/newish companies) will have a booth.

| I'm trying to schedule a meeting of family members at Nats so they can see some of the best performances as the end of the day -- specifically, men's epee in this case.
Based on your experience and given the early morning start time and the usual large number of competitors, what would be your best guess (within an hour or two) for the final bout? |

| Between 4-6 I'd think. It'll run faster than normal b/c there's NO repechage though.
edit: yeah, oops.

| The Westin hotel which was the venue hotel for the NAC in April 2004 is about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the venue cutting through Centennial Park and CNN. The revolving restaurant at the top of the Westin has a beautiful view but is very expensive.
The Wyndham is a block closer but not as nice a hotel as the Westin. The Holiday Inn is closer still. The closest hotels are the Omni at CNN and Embassy Suites, both of which are now sold out.
The Hyatt was the venue hotel October NAC in 2004 and was apparently very nice. There are restaurants to walk to in the area.
The walk to the venue is definitely doable from all of the hotels in the general area downtown area but it will probably be hot and humid. |

| Well since they said they can't pay for a shuttle I'd guess one of the sold out really close ones b/c nasty sweaty refs to start the day isn't cool, and really if folks have to walk for 15min to make a 7:30 meeting every morning most of us will quit and go home.

If it makes a big difference to you drop an email to Christine. If it doesn't then wait another week or so until you get your packet in the mail.

-B | Don't know where you stayed in Atlanta at the NAC in October 04, but there most definitely was shuttle bus service from the main event hotel. |

Meh, I could just be confusing it with another event, they do tend to blend.

| I remember staying at the Marriot Marquis for the Atlanta NAC in October 04... I fenced one day and refereed the other three... there was definitely a shuttle bus from the hotel to the venue and back...
not that it matters.
and i've been emailing back and forth with christine... the referees are being put at the omni this year.

| The reason claimed for not providing shuttles this year is that the price of gas/diesel makes them prohibitively expensive. Circumstances were different in '04; past history is not a reliable predictor of future events. Alas.

Alas. | The comments were made in response to my post about (apparently mis-)remembering that there wasn't a shuttle when the USFA has previously visited Atlanta, rather than speculation on whether or not such would be available next month.
