| Where do you hurt? In any physical endevor as demanding as fencing is, we invariably incur some aches and pains when we push ourselves a little too hard. So - where do you hurt that is likely due to fencing?
Me:
The ball of my left foot
The back of my left knee
Right shoulder (may or may not be fencing related)
Rib-cage (where I got hit hard by an epee)
Right-hand index finger knuckle

| Knees - always, after fencing. Other places are optional...

| Both ankles (partially fencing related).
My right shoulder from spending too many hours throwing sticks in the water for my dog.
None of the pain is acute, I just feel a little tightness when I use those areas. Over the years I have come up with a good maintenance program of yoga and supplements.

| My left ankle -- it's a problem I've had since years before I started fencing, but I had to pick the one sport where I routinely torque it in just the way that hurts the most....
And yet, it's not half as annoying as the times my fencing is affected by an injury I didn't get fencing. |

| Broke the left ankle at DitD last year. Also, my knees sometimes and my back, which was bad to begin with. I'm not counting muscle pains that just come from building quads, etc.

| My back (right) heel... after standing on it all day (refereeing, for example) it will hurt... but the morning after fencing, it is quite painful to walk on. I have to get it checked out, but haven't had the time.
It usually doesn't hurt that bad WHILE I'm fencing, but that next morning... yowza...

| To prevent several things from hurting, I followed my friend Josh's example, and do my level best to become Robo-Fencer before every event.
Six braces: both knees, both ankles (recent, from injuring myself volunteering at the Houston NAC), right quad/hamstring (optional), and right wrist (weapon hand). Two shoe inserts, to help keep from hurting my feet/heels. Plus, for a regulation underarm protector, I wear a full-body one that's made of terrycloth under nylon - no bruises for me!
I still manage to hurt muscles though - even when I stretch out really well, I invariably find that the muscles most necessary in my last lesson, the one I just implemented that day, are the ones that ache anyway. This past weekend resulted in my right quad and hamstring aching, and I was dumb and forgot to stretch my weapon shoulder, so it's a little tight.

| - right wrist
- right shoulder
- left knee (it's been broken and acts up if I overwork it)
- side of big toe on left foot (yeah, rotating foot when lunging)
- ankles (mostly the morning after fencing, have to walk carefully for a while)

| From fencing? very little, my ankles. From coaching? my right shoulder kills me after an hour or so. From reffing? Everything, my back my knees my feet , heck even my thumb hurts from pressing the start /stop button so many times in foil for all the off targets. I have learned to stretch my elbows so I don't pull anything when I signal offtarget and misses |

| Dislocated my right shoulder. Overextended my right arm while lunging and then going to parry 5 and the very end of the lunge. That was painfull.
Shoulder actually went back in place by itself when I was trying to remove the lame/jacket. |

My many pains:
1. Inflammation Behind the kneecap, runners knee.
Seen a sports medicine doctor on this, a series of stretches and strengthening exercise given to me have help with this.
2. Shin Splints
If I wear more foot support for my feet help this go away but the same
foot support worsens my kneecap pain.
3. Back Pain
Use to pull my back when leaning when I lunged but corrected my form/better footwork to use my feet to reach the target. Now rarely do I have any back pain. When I did pull my back I had force myself to use the sore muscles to work out the pain or it will last forever. |

| After a hard workout, usually my upper and lower legs -- but that's more likely due to the fact that I let the dog sleep at the foot of the bed and that cuts down on the amount of my stretching/movement while I sleep. |
