| Cheney shoots trial lawyer who 'gets in his way'. Quote:
Cheney was hunting quail at a friend's South Texas ranch when he shot and wounded Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old attorney from Austin and Bush-Cheney campaign contributor, about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Whittington, who was hit with birdshot in the face, neck and upper torso, was being moved out of intensive care Monday at a hospital in Corpus Christi, officials at the facility said.
| A unverifiable source said that Cheney was quoted as saying "I hope he recovers. It was an accident, I feel horrible about it. 9/11 changed everything though. If he presses charges, I'm going to have him declared as an 'enemy combatant'. Hope he likes the Cuban weather. Besides he's a lawyer, who's going to give a flying **** about another lawyer 'disappearing'? I'll tell you who, nobody who's a loyal American!!!" Cheney was also said to have screamed "The heart! Save the heart! I'm going to need that!!" As rescuers loaded the unfortunate victim of Cheney's poor aim into an ambulance.
Cheney did not respond to the question "How do you expect to run a war, if you can't even bring down a quail without killing someone."
Cheney also did not respond to a question of rather or not a Vice President could be impeached for being a dumbass...
Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said on Sunday that the Vice President may have broken the law and should resign if he did. This entire release, excepting the part in vbcode quotes, has been a complete political fabrication.

| I pretty much don't know why this is news. Actually, I do, but I don't think it should be news. |

| This story makes me chuckle when I hear it no matter how many times I hear. I am sure it will eventually get old, but not in the forseeable future.

| Well.... Dick Cheney becomes the first Vice-President since Aaron Burr to shoot someone while in office.
In other news--Cheney invites Ted Kennedy to go elk hunting with him....

| Quails have an inate sense to fly between hunters. They never fly in the direction that you can get a clean shot off at them and they wait until you almost step on them before they fly. Most good hunters know not to shoot when they fly in the direction of another hunter.
I guess our VP is just trigger-happy. Who would have guested that... |

| At least he shot a lawyer.
Has anyone done any research to verify that he had a valid out-of-state hunting permit? This whole thing gets much funnier, if he was poaching.

According to Foxnews, Cheney was indeed poaching. He had a license, but not the proper $7.00 stamps: Quote: |
Vice President Dick Cheney has been given a warning citation for breaking Texas hunting law by failing to buy a $7 stamp allowing him to shoot upland game birds.
|
Hmmmm... I think it's time to appoint a special investigator.

| OK, no joke, this is the White House's response to the incident: Quote: |
White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan tried to absolve Cheney of blame for shooting wealthy Austin lawyer Harry Whittington, saying that hunting "protocol was not followed by Mr. Whittington when it came to notifying others that he was there. And so, you know, unfortunately, these types of hunting accidents happen from time to time."
| Several hunting experts disagree: Quote:
Several hunting experts were skeptical of McClellan's explanation. They said Cheney might have violated a cardinal rule of hunting: Know your surroundings before you pull the trigger.
"Particularly identify the game that you are shooting and particularly identify your surroundings, that it's safe to shoot," said Mark Birkhauser, the incoming president of the International Hunter Education Association, a group of fish and wildlife agencies. "Every second, you're adjusting your personal information that it is a safe area to shoot or it's not a safe area to shoot."
| And, the incident wasn't reported for over 24 hourse. The owners of the property reported it with the White House claiming that the first priority was to ensure proper medical care for the lawyer...

| Just saw this one on the 'net:
Sung to Aerosmith's "Janie's got a gun"
Dum, dum, dum, Cheney what have you done
Dum, dum, dum, it's was supposed to be NRA fun
Dum, dum, dum, Cheney what have you done
Dum, dum, dum, it's the sound, it's the sound...
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah....
Cheney's got a gun
Cheney's got a gun
His hunting trip came undone
After the wife said go have some fun
What did this attorney do
He didn't give enough to the GOP pool
They say when Cheney was found
He said he saw a quail flying away
He even focused his scope and let out a yell
But no way it could have been my hunting pal
He might get kicked out of the NRA
Cheney's got a gun
Cheney's got a gun
He didn't see him behind the tree..
He didn't know what to do..so he called the deputy
Thank god he didn't call Ted Kennedy
Run away, run away from the buckshot
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Cheney's got a gun
Cheney's got a gun
Everybody is on the run
Which gives me an idea for the GOP
When deer season opens lets invite Hilary.

| This would be the second man shot by a Vice president, the first being Alexander Hamilton. Hey, does anyone know why Burr shot that man, other than him just being crazy?

Then... the White House, in their typical, cover it up as much as possible continued to withhold info, which, of course, guarantees that every pencil jockey trying to make a scoop will be digging as deep as possible.
The owners of the ranch were lobbyists. Shooting a man on lobbyists' dollars isn't exactly a way to help your party turn down the cries of the Republicans' 'Culture of Corruption' that has pervaded news stories for the last few months with much more to come.
The alternatives are:
1) Violence in Iraq
2) Cartoon protestors burning down buildings ( I picture Bugs Bunny holding a torch)
3) Israelis and Palestinians squaring off.
It has done an effective job of drawing the headlines away from the scathing Republican committee report on the federal failures during Katrina though... hmmmmmmm...

It seems like Scott McClellan wasn't int he loop. Cheney found out that Whittington had had a heart attack at 7.45am. Nobody told the White House and thus McClellan at 10am starts open season by cracking jokes.
The Democrats seemed to have got stuck in early!
Democratic staffers on Capitol Hill circulated a quote from President Bush, in a 2000 interview with the Houston Chronicle, in which he hailed Cheney as "somebody who is going to shoot straight with the American people."
"Bush-Quail '06," cracked Democratic strategist Jenny Backus.
"The CIA assured Cheney that Harry Whittington was actually a pheasant," added Democratic speechwriter Jeff Nussbaum.
Not to be outdone, conservative radio broadcaster Rush Limbaugh offered this joke on his show Monday: "Would you rather go hunting with Dick Cheney or riding in a car over a bridge with Ted Kennedy?" (The punch line: At least Cheney takes you to the hospital.)

| Hi!
Over here, there is a crime named something like "accidental causation of bodily harm". Is there such a crime in Texas, and is Cheney covered by immunity to criminal law?
Personally, I think that anyone who causes bodily harm to a human with a firearm, and does not have legal right to do so (law enforcement, military, self-defence) should a the very least lose all weapon licences. Are there laws mandating loss of weapon licence for certain cases in Texas?
Have a nice time!

Peter Gustafsson | I doubt it. You don't even need to report non-fatal shooting accidents in Texas.
