    Is this old news?

12 more athletes in Olympic fencing for 2008. Does this have any effect on the number of medals? Anyone have any more info?

    More women for Beijing Games
Turin (Italy): The number of women in the Summer Olympics will continue to grow. The International Olympic Committee executive board approved new quotas on Sunday for the 2008 Beijing Games, bringing the organisation closer to reaching its goal of gender equity.

The board accepted fencing’s request for 12 additional athletes: eight more (four men, four women) in modern pentathlon; four more (two men, two women) in taekwondo; 10 more (five men, five women) in triathlon; and 20 more in cycling for two new bmx events.

    Wooohooooo!!! Good catch Stryder!

    From the IOC site:
    http://www.olympic.org/uk/news/olymp...uk.asp?id=1638
    05 February 2006
This afternoon, the Executive Board (EB) reviewed pending requests from a number of International Federations to increase their quotas for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and made the following decisions.

Requests accepted by the Executive Board:
    FIE – Fencing
Request: an increase of 12 athletes, three individual places for each of the four team events.

    UIPM – Modern pentathlon
Request: to increase quota by four additional men and four additional women.

    WTF – World Taekwondo federation
Request: following the introduction of Oceania as a new region, the WTF requested a quota increase by additional two men and two women in order to balance the attribution of quota places across continents.
Twelve more medals for fencing!!! Women's foil will be fully contested!

Awww crap... does this mean we have to stop Calling Roche 'Roach' now?

Umm... before the celebrations break out, read a little closer. Its not 12 MEDALS, its 12 ATHLETES. Either to bring the team events up to a full 4 athletes, and give the alternate a full Olympic credential, allow them to stay in the Villiage, compete in the individuals, etc. or to bring in a couple of more teams.

Lets hold the champaign for a bit.

Yes, you're right. It does say "three individual places for each of the four team events." 4 team events not 6... damn...

So that just means that the team fencers dont have to be the same as the individual ones?

I would guess that it is 3 individual fencers from countries that do not qualify a team....
Based on World Cup standings or Zonal qualifiers

Could it be that a country that has two fencers in a weapon could then add a third to make a team?

Formerly, they had to get an existing fencer from another weapon.

    er what?

you either qualified as a team, or had one individual per country (in the events with teams).

I'm reliably informed it means that for each of the 4 weapons that will have a team event, 3 additional places will be available in the respective individual event to increase possibility of more countries having representation (ie to increase degree of universality). It's not yet been confirmed which zones will get these extra places (because the allocation of these places has not yet been decided).
