referees (grumble) fencing in the australian national competition, i was 14-14 with another fencer in the DE, and the president called the movements as his attack (touche). i thought not, and presented my point of view to the referee, with no success. so i lost the bout.
however, aquaintances of mine were watching the bout, and are (fairly good) international fencers and they thought it was my point. i talked to the organiser, and he commented that the referee was used because there was a shortage.
i feel a bit shortchanged
is there a lack of quality refereeing in other places also? and how qualified do referees have to be to preside in national competitions? -

Only in France are ALL referees infallible. Everywhere else, they make mistakes. ( More when I'm fencing than at other times, it seems! ) Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -
Thats why i fence epee ... much less of that to deal with.. -

Array Alex if it was the Normal case at Aussie nationals Denise was probably scraping the barrel because everyone saw her coming and ran due to not WANTING to ref. I know a fair few people who did last year. As for losing 14/15 I feel for you, I lost 13/14 at Adelaide this year in the 16 DURING the extra minute. Grumble. I dont think Australia actually HAS a required qualification, though I heard a rumour about people thinking about starting a course to allow for consistancy between states! Theses are evil....VERY evil, someone rescue me pls! -

I wish... The only thing that happens about French referees is that they don't have an accent when they say "En Garde". After that, there all human and they are as fallible as the guy next door. - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Array The best way to mitigate all tough calls is to NOT GET HIT. One light, baby It works for all three weapons.

hahaha well i m a french national foiler and here too ref r sometimes weird ...
mainly its self-refering in national senior competitions (foil men) ... for pools, then from 1/16 to the end refering is usually good BUT of course u still can loose by 1 beacause of a ref mistake.
Anyway, last time they gave us referees coming from nowhere for the 2nd pool, hahaha evryone had to light alone or to announce when touched, else the judgment was simply 1000000 km away from the reallity
well, doing foil imply having refering mistakes, there r mistakes at international and national and of course -personal experience- its always AGAINST U !!!! -
for veeco : veeco is a french MASO heheh
