Hamas wins

I'm surprised no one has commented on this.

Hamas sweeps to election victory

So Hamas has won.

I wonder if they studied the 2000 election...

As Netanyahu said, "Hamastan has just been formed".

But who knows? The founders of the Israeli state also did not have clean hands, but managed to outgrow their origins and become legitimate leaders of a respectable state. One might even argue that some of the American Founding Fathers did the same. Let's see what Hamas does with power. ( I suspect that at least at first it will be like the boy who grabbed the lizard by its tail only to have the tail come off in his hand...and had no idea what to do with it. )

This puts us back to where we were when Arafat and his PLO/Fatah organization had not yet accepted (even as a public gesture) a two-state solution, and their charter was still "destroy Israel and take back the whole space as Palestine". Only time will tell if Hamas can be domesticated by being part of a government, but there has to be willingness to 'put down the gun', and a policy change to accept coexistance and two states. Hamas has shown no signs of that yet.

Purely on an intramural level, it's certainly a comment on the PLO that the Palestinians threw them out because of their incompetence and corruption.

Sinn Fein, another terrorist-group-turned-politcal-party, changed their approach. Although I'm EXTREMELY skeptical about hamas being able to pull it off especially with Iranian pressure, the good news is that if they dont make things better for their people, and dont morph into a taliban-like regeim, they'll get thrown out in the next elections. The ball is now in their court.

Same thing has happened to the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka and svereal otheres. Although, I would argue, what actually happens is not so much the pacification of the hwole movement, but rather its separation into several wings/layers with differential attitude towards the orignal idoeology. Hopefully, (and as has been the case with the Tamils and Sinn fein) the people who are now in power are of a more moderate stance or will at least gradually evolve in that direction.... Although it will not help if a number of key international players don't recognize the legitimacy of this government... Our Prime Minister-elect is already hinting that Canada is not going to recognize Hamas... which is a pretty fundamnetal foreign policy shift as far as Canada goes....

It looks like unless Hamas behaves (and it probably won't), it will find itself without diplomatic ties to all of the west, and probably China and Japan as well. Which would be very bad if they want to rebuild their country.
