Looking For Foil Competition Videos I hope this topic hasn't already been done to death. I've bought most of the foil material from Fencing Footage, and basically would be happy to get my hands on any World Championship, World Cup, or Olympic Foil video, new or old. If there is anyone out there that has any of this, I'd be grateful to hear about it. -

Array I'm in the same boat. I've got all FF's épée stuff and most of their foil.
Eric, do you have any old WC or Olympic tapes (Atlanta?)out there?

Array eric (edew) has the Olympic stuff on tape. expressions of interest will be appreciated as then i can get a copy much faster!!!!
speaking of fencing footage, which of the foil videos would you recommend getting? some of the stuff looks interesting.
also theres some interesting clips on www.escrime-tv.com , although they didn't seem to work properly and i had to get a directory listing up and download them manually (which is better cause then i've got them saved!!) -
hoh did you get the clips, I can't manage to make it work -
On the Fencing Footage foil materials, the 1989 men's foil team finals and the 1999 World Championships men's and women's foil finals are the most interesting.
The 1989 tape is West Germany versus the Soviet Union and the video is very high quality. It is also very long (16 five touch bouts -- the competition was before the relay format. It went the distance.) There are three past and future individual world champions on the Soviet team (including a young Golubitsky coming in halfway through as an alternate) and two on the German team. The fencers seem to take a lot more time between actions to maneuver before someone attacks than in the more recent events.
The 1999 World Championship tape is hand-cam, but fairly clear. The bouts are good. The men's team final (France v. China)is fun, and it looked to me like the Chinese team was victimized by the directing at the very end. Great fencing by both teams though.
I also have a few other tapes. The 1999 Cuba World Cup is professional video with a wild Cuban crowd and Spanish commentary. The foil bouts are extremely quick. The two semi-final bouts are blowouts, but the final bout is very exciting. The 1998 World Championship tapes have good fencing on them, but the hand-cam quality is not very good, with a lot of people walking in front of the camera. The St. Petersburg World Cup is similar -- good fencing, lousy video. The Hungary Junior World Cup isn't bad, but it's pretty short. Finally, if you can still get it, the 1997 World Championships from the USFA were professional quality (South African Broadcasting) with entertaining commentary by a South African Sabre fencer.
That's a lot more than I expected to say -- I hope it helps. -
