Another IGB problem - a comparison

    Hi!

This is an offshoot from the "petion to recall" thread, which is so long so that subissues get lost in the fray. I wrote there in post #736:

A bit of googling revealed another nasty brawl.

About 4 years ago, a senior officer of the Swedish Volleyball federation wrote in a letter to a senior officer of the Danish federation, Rolf Andresen, that:

FIVB and CEV are the international and European volleyball federations, respectively.

Somehow, this letter came to the knowledge of the FIVB boss Ruben Acosta, and Lasse Svensson was immediately summoned to the FIVB headquarters in Geneve to explain himself. Shortly thereafter, the punishment was announced: Lasse Svensson was forbidden to have any position whatsoever in any volleyball function, both International and Swedish effective immediately and for his whole life onwards. The stated reason for this punishment was that Lasse´s statements were disparaging to Acosta. The punishment was not previously on the FIVB bylaws - Acosta put it in there for the occasion. That included posts to which one can be voted for in the Swedish federation, and indeed low-level Swedish club trainerships. A local club that wanted to have him as a trainer was told in no uncertain terms by Acosta that they would be forbidden to compete in any competitions unless the offer was rescinded. Lasse Svensson, a former Swedish federation chairman, did not want the Swedish federation to suffer, so he sucked it up.

Fastforward to now. In the meanwhile, Acosta has resigned from his IOC membership, ostensibly for age reasons. However, it is said that he did it so that various wrongdoings would not cause scandals, and that he could keep running the FIVB as his fiefdom. When Japan did not qualify for the World Championships, he fixed in them anyway - after the failed qualification - so as to please the Japanese sponsor. He has given an officer of the Argentinian federation a treatment similar to the one given to Lasse Svensson. Also, he has made an enemy of his former right-hand man, who administered the punishment to Lasse Svensson. That guy has now come around and said that the treatment of Lasse Svensson was not in accordance to FIVB bylaws, and that he should be reinstated. It is because of that turnaround that the whole thing with Lasse Svensson came into the open, and he is now fighting back.

Why do I expound at length about volleyball´s inner workings? Well, I think it is instructive, and I doubt that anyone in USFA, either pro-recall or otherwise, will relish the thought of Rene Roch being inspired and giving lifetime expulsions to both Nancy and her detractors for, well, whatever he seems fit to call the infraction!

Anybody else get cold shivers down the spine for this whole thing?

    Have a nice time!
