I recently downloaded the Armorer's exam guide from USFA. I was wondering how many armorers are actually certified through this and if you found any part of it particularly difficult.

Yep, according to what I'm reading here, there are three levels of Armorer and Apprentice. Level 3 is the lowest and 1 is the highest. There is a written exam and a verbal exam that cover all three weapons, body cords, and scoring machines.
All I need right now is a certified Armorer to recommend me for Apprentice so I can begin the process.

So far as I know, there really hasn't been anything formally done about the certification scheme, regardless of the exam being posted (remember, we're dealing with a strictly volunteer operation on this one).
I'm not completely satisfied with all of the questions on the exam-- I'd prefer to see some more coverage of equipment control methods and troubleshooting, and there are a few questions which seem to be more about showing off knowledge of fencing-tech trivia than practical skills (for example, the ones about knowing the factory-default wiring colors for different reels-- anyone with an ohmmeter can figure out which wires are which, and someone may have swapped the order on a previous repair anyway).
