| Here's a link that explains how it works. http://www.monarchist.ca/new/nutsbolts.html
She's our "Head of State", while the Prime Minister is the "Head of Government". Oaths, are sworn to the Queen, our money has her image on it and I believe she's the Commander and Chief of our military.

In Canada, the Queen (Elizabeth II) is roughly the same as the President, but not elected. She has a number of ceremonial duties, plus a bunch of constitutional ones.
The biggest practical difference is the fact the Queen is apolitical, highly educated, highly experienced and highly advised and so only really, really, really stupid laws/actions get squashed (hasn't happened in a long time) by the Executive Branch in Canada.
Technically, the Queen appoints our government, appoints our judges, appoints our senators, appoints officers in the military and calls our elections. In Canadian matters, she relies ONLY on the advice of Her Canadian Privvy Council (made up of Judges, former Governors General the PM and Cabinet). The PM is the one who puts forward their advice formally to the Queen. If the Queen formally rejects this advice, the PM must resign.
Hope this helps.
James.

| Technically she is Elizabeth the first of the UK and commonwealths (etc etc). Don't let the ERII thing fool you. |

| The Queen's official title as "Head of State" in Canada is:
Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.
The Crown is also the font of all Provincial, and Federal Honours/Awards in addition to everything above. As She is Head of State for 15 nations, plus the Commonwealth, she can be "stretched a little thin," and therefore has an appointed representative for day to day dealings in Canada called the Governor General. Right now it's Michelle Jean. A real wonderful lady. For provincial matters, She appoints Lieutenant Governors on the advice of the Governor General. They work totally independantly. the Lt. G. give Royal Assent to legislation on a provincial level,a nd the G.G. on all federal legislation.
Not to get to much into the politics, but in our minority gov't situation, the constitutional role of the Crown, and ensuring stability in the transition of government, and the adherence to law has been quite an educating for me personally.

Sorry, going OT again...

| No, no. Hockey is certainly an on-thread topic when talking about the Canadian Monarchy.

James. | Oh good. Well, it was great, I really enjoyed it. I wish they had it over here (they have a couple of teams but as far as i can tell they must all just get bored playing each other twice a month or summat). There''s an ice rink in Streatham though, just near me, so I might see if they have an ice hockey team. Even if it's cr@p, I could become a major fan. So exciting!
