Testing Foil Wire

I've been doing some club armory work and am wondering whats the best way to test foil wire before you glue it to the blade and assemble the foil?

personally i think the best way is to get a multimeter and test it. i believe the regulations mandate a max of 1 ohm, but i'm probably wrong abt this.

I test before gluing.

Multimeter with one lead to an alligator clip on the blade. I have a microclip used to test integrated circuits on the other lead. I strip the Foil wire back a little and clip on that. Radio Shack should have the microclips.

Then I test with a weight.

I do kinda the same thing, using my Dan DeChaine box and a little tool I saw Dan had at Armorers College.

The tool is simole...the plastic body, screws, and pins from a Prieur-type 3-pin plug. You take a couple of the really narrow, long-nosed alligator clips, alter the back end so it'll fit into the base of the pins, then solder them together, insert them into the plug body, and insert the screw (the only purpose of which is simply to keep the pin/clip assembly IN the block!).

This then plugs into the Danbox as if it was a body cord or weapon being tested. If I'm testing foil, strip a bit of the wire, clip it to the B socket line, and touch the tang to the C line....if the wire's good, you'll get the appropriate response. I'll do weight check at that time.

For epee you clip to the A & B lines and do the weight and shim adjustments before gluing.

Lots easier than trying to do it withthe ohmmeter leads, although that IS possible. Before I bought my Danbox, I'd soldered a pair of clips togetgher end to end, and used those to connect to the ohmmeter leads so I could leave my hands free.

The practical upshot is, if you want to test the wire before gluing, you need to find a way to replcate the circuit reliably.

Thanks guys. Thats a neat idea Purple. Maybe I'll try putting one of those plugs together. Dan comes up with the neatest tools!
