The story: I've got chronic shoulder tendonitis (bad genes). Back in November, I got hit straight on the clavicle with a deep lunge. For a month, my orthopedic doc thought I'd done something to my shoulder joint (rotator cuff tear, labrum tear). MRI was inconclusive (aside from an insane amount of inflammation, so much that the tendons barely have room to move), so the orthopod sent me back to PT. I saw the same physical therapist I saw for my original shoulder problem nearly two years ago. I explained to the PT that it wasn't my tendonitis pain, it was different.
That's where we figured out (he did, anyway) that it was my AC joint and not my shoulder joint (the AC joint is above your shoulder and a tiny bit closer to your neck, it's where the clavicle and scapular meet). If the orthopod had injected the cortisone shot into the AC joint and not the shoulder joint, I would've been fine.
Argh.
Anyway, it's like my AC joint has become a target for people to hit dead-on and it keeps getting re-injured. I fenced tonight at the behest of the PT to figure out what specific fencing movements were causing trouble (it was ALMOST BETTER) and not once, but twice, I caught an epee on the AC joint.
Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any ideas about how I can protect that spot so it can heal fully and not be re-injured?
