Everything I ever needed to know, I learned from fencing....

    Attack now, riposte later.

    Just because you're "in-line" doesn't mean you're right.

No one can possibly know everything, including directors.

Respect your opponent, you can't kill him if he doesn't want to play.

Listen to others advice, you never know when you may use it.

Know when to attack the problem and when to retreat from it.

Help novices, you will learn more from teaching them than playing.

Have fun and enjoy yourself, you never know when it may end.
Don't take life so seriously... You'll never live through it.

Your feet will only go where your brain tells them to go.

A fencer in motion tends to stay in motion.

A fencers ability to stop and reverse direction is directly related to his mass.

This actually sounds like that TV commercial for Wachovia securities.

This would be a good start for a TV campaign promoting fencing!
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Even when they are wrong, the Director is always right.

    [QUOTE]

Ain't that the truth! I'm finding it out now with my sabre student and the beginner classes I'm running.

From my beginner's booklet, I submit the following for your approval (I didn't know Rod Serling fenced!)

21 RULES AND TRUISMS OF FENCING

    21. Respect your opponent's skills...even if you don't particularly like him.
    20. When arguing a call with the director, be polite and respectful; don't be an *** about it.
    19. If a particular trick doesn't work the first couple of times, f'Pete's sake, try something different!
    18. There's nothing wrong with beating your opponent 5-0 in the pool round.
    17. In epee, check your tip screws after each bout.
    16. In foil, ensure your tip is still there after each halt of action.
    15. Don't be nasty to the people in your pool...you'll most likely have one of them in the DE round.
    14. If things aren't going your way, don't get so upset that you lose your self-control & discipline; pissed off people make mistakes.
    13. Show support for your salle mates when they're fencing and you're not. Just one "Go get 'im!" can make all the difference in the world.
    12. Just as there's no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole, there are no friends on the piste.
    11. Don't stop until the director calls "halt!"
    10. Don't cheat or accuse others of doing so just so you can get another point, particularly when you're far ahead or vastly superior in skill to your opponent. You demean yourself and the sport when you do so.
    9. Retreat, don't just run away...there's a difference.
    8. Finish the attack!
    7. You may be big, tall and strong, but remember that power means nothing without control.
    6. Be gracious when you lose...more importantly, be gracious when you win.
    5. Don't look at the %$#@& box!!
    4. Don't let yourself get psyched out by a higher rated opponent...you never know when you're going to be hot.
    3. Have fun...not many people can stab a total stranger with a long knife and get rewarded for it!
    2. Never give up - even if you're down 14-0.
    1. Never underestimate ANYONE!!

Keep moving. Once you slow down (mentally or physically) it is hard to get going again.

    - Somehow this is more true for the old guys like me, who always seems to be on the receiving end of thrashings by kids.

Brute force is rarely a reasonable substitute for thoughtful finesse.

    Only to a certain level.

Brute force should only work a time or two against an experienced, thinking fencer. Once the initial shock wears off, such a fencer should easily be able to counter brute force.
