| The F-86 was an impressive machine when it entered the Korean conflict. And its lines are sleek and stylish, like a 1960s Italian sportscar. I wouldn't mind flying one (and today would be a great day for it here). So yes, I'll call it a good thing.

| Good planes, but this one was better! http://web.telia.com/~u21804390/svw54e.htm
The SAAB J29 was propably the fastest of this kind of jets. It was also very easy to service for the mechanics, in fact, like all of SAAB:s fighters, it can be serviced by conscripts!
I have seen a J29 fly at least two times in my life, and its a sight that you won´t forget!
Btw, the J29 did see action i Congo, back in 1961, after three days there was no more enemy planes to shoot down. |

The two planes were not exactly on par. The MiG-15 had a higher service ceiling than the F-86, outclimbed it, and was faster at high altitude -- all of which attributes ought to have made it the deadlier of the two in almost any dogfight.
However, the guns weren't comparable -- the Sabre had a lot of small, fast low-damage rounds; and the MiG had a handful of large, slow high-damage shells. The MiG's gunsight wasn't nearly as good, either. The MiG was designed to take out big bombers, not nimble fighters.
That said, when the MiG was handled by capable pilots (including the occasional Soviet and Chinese pilot getting some "hot" training) it gave the Sabre a run for its money. And even with North Korean pilots the MiG tore the heck out of the American jets and Mustangs in theater until the Sabre came along. But once the F86 came along, the skill of the American pilot was so superior to that of the North Korean pilot, that the MiG's combat edge was more than nullified.
(Dang, I'd sure love to be up right now, instead of flying this desk. Even just some touch-and-goes.)

And JAS 39 'Gripen' is the most awesome plane ever.

| No, I don't like sabres. The sabre is a very aggressive thing. http://www.library.ca.gov/history/sy...sabertiger.jpg
It is hard to defend a sabre attack.

And anyway, you DID ask...

| Sabre is way cool.
I told myself, once I have fenced epee for 3 years, I'll get into sabre as well. It looks extremely fascinating and I definitely do want to get to know how to fence it.

( There is an old American fighter plane called the SabreJet. http://www.aero-web.org/specs/northam/f-86l.htm ) |

| The F-14 is cool for nostalgic reasons (can you say Top Gun?) but a little old. The FA-18 is incredible, but it dosn't have the payload capacity of the F-14. Navy planes are cooler just becouse they get shot off the decks of ships. The pilots must have more balls too.
Realy I don't know crap about planes, just what I learned on the discovery channel and from Top Gun.

| MMMM! Flying planes!!! Love them! One of the essential 3 "F's" of my life, another is fencing.
Warplanes- the WW2-P-38Lightening. Fast and beautiful twin boomed fighter bomber.
I fly single engine planes, Cessna 152, 172's, V35 Bonanza and anything else available to rent through my FBO.
I am a sabeuriste! I'm a member of Babes With Blades in Southern California.
Let's talk flying or fencing! It's all good.
