"If you give me permission to shoot with a big phat flash during your bouts, I'll use lower speed film and we can eliminate that grain problem."
Absolutely, and something tells me that the bout directors and competators would not take too kindly to me using a "big phat flash."
Darius,
I was fortunate to have decent light, primarly due to the fact that some genius in athletics at Boston College recently decided to paint the entire interior of the gym white, thus, amplifying the ambient light.
I shot the meet using a Nikon N90, using either an 85mm FF at f2.0, or a Nikkor 80-200mm AF at f2.8. A monopod helped with balance, and I was able to shoot both 400 and 800, but they were in fact Fuji Press, not Superia (have to fix that). The difference, if any, is minimal, but the Press tends to be somewhat more forgiving on exposure.
Even better, the lighting conditions were such that I didn't have to push the film, so the grain and quality of the images are better than usual. I also risked shooting at a lower shutter speed to get a little better depth of field. For the most part I was able to get away with 1/125 to 1/250, whereas I often find myself shooting 1/500 to stop action.
When I'm shooting at MIT or Brandeis, I usally have to push the 800 one stop (to 1600), but past that point the grain really starts to show. The following is an early image I shot at Brandeis shooting TMax 3200.
You want grain? Well...you got yourself some grain ;-)
