Images Hi,
I am interested in making some fencing shirts, and was wondering if anyone had any idea where I could find some downloadable images. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks. -
Go to www.nbcolympics.com
Then go to the fencing page.
Then click on the link to "Image Grabs"
There are also images on www.fencingsucks.com Lumberg.

Here's a web page with a lot of fencing images: http://members.tripod.com/~fencer1/page4.html -

If you'd like permission to use an image, please email me at: evanwhitney@mediaone.net
I should have a new folder of recent images up in the next three weeks or so. -

Array I recently shot members of the Brown University Fencing Team in competition against the likes of Dartmouth, Sacred Heart, Harvard, M.I.T., and Brandeis at Meet #2 of the Northeast Fencing Conference Championships.
You may find an archive of those images such as the one above online at: http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=95050

Array Some excellent images. Well done.
I really enjoyed looking through them. -
Nice pictures. Some were too grainy though.

Array If you give me permission to shoot with a big phat flash during your bouts, I'll use lower speed film and we can eliminate that grain problem.
Or, if the fencing.net crew will pitch into the "buy Darius a lens with a huge aperture" fund...
Most fencing shots are going to be grainy...depending on the exact lighting conditions.
Evan, I noticed you're using Superia 400 -- the venues the NCAA competitions are held in must be pretty well lit, eh?

Absolutely, and something tells me that the bout directors and competators would not take too kindly to me using a "big phat flash."
Darius,
I was fortunate to have decent light, primarly due to the fact that some genius in athletics at Boston College recently decided to paint the entire interior of the gym white, thus, amplifying the ambient light.
I shot the meet using a Nikon N90, using either an 85mm FF at f2.0, or a Nikkor 80-200mm AF at f2.8. A monopod helped with balance, and I was able to shoot both 400 and 800, but they were in fact Fuji Press, not Superia (have to fix that). The difference, if any, is minimal, but the Press tends to be somewhat more forgiving on exposure.
Even better, the lighting conditions were such that I didn't have to push the film, so the grain and quality of the images are better than usual. I also risked shooting at a lower shutter speed to get a little better depth of field. For the most part I was able to get away with 1/125 to 1/250, whereas I often find myself shooting 1/500 to stop action.
When I'm shooting at MIT or Brandeis, I usally have to push the 800 one stop (to 1600), but past that point the grain really starts to show. The following is an early image I shot at Brandeis shooting TMax 3200.
You want grain? Well...you got yourself some grain ;-)

Array Hrm...I go to Rochester Institute of Technology, which is often the #1 photo school in the country, the trick is to bring enough juice that the directors and competitors didn't know what hit them until you're pulling your prints out of the developing bath in the hotel bathroom a mile away. (Not that I've ever done that, or used a hotel bathroom as a darkroom, although I have friends who...)
Fast glass is nice -- I'm hoping to graduate and perhaps have enough disposable cash by the beginning of the '02 season to have a 70-200ish f/2.8 instead of the 4.0 that I have currently.
A friend and I did some modeling (advance-flick for a few hours!!) for a buddy's special FX photo class, involving tungsten-lit trails, I haven't seen the prints yet, but he says they're pretty neat. If I get, I'll put them up.

Array More images online here, although not mine. They're from the Sydney Olympics. http://slam.ca/2000GamesGallery/fencing.html
