| Ratings Yes, I know this has been gone over many times before, but I looked back up to "all topics" and I still couldn't find the old one. How does the lettered rating system work? I understand it for the most part, but am having a hard time explaining it to family, and know you guys are much clearer than I am. Oh, and I'm not new, this is Foil Girl who lost her password and figured she needed a new screen name anyway

| Foil Girl, have you switched weapons?
Lettered ratings:
A is the highest, followed by B, C, D and E
Fencers without any rank are "U" for unranked.
The numbers following the letter are thge year when your rating was last re-earned.
You increase your rating by placing in, or winning an event that awards a given rating.
In an event with 6 fencers of any ratings, the only rating given is an "E" for first place.

| Yup, switched a while ago actually, just never got down to changing my name on here
I was kind of looking for more of a how to obtain each letter. maybe a website that explains, if you don't want to explain it yourself? Like, in order to obtain a D, you have to be in a competition with... ect. But thanks Stryder.

| ROFL!
All I know about ratings is that I have to vigurously defend my U01 every meet.
Dang proud of that U

| I'm with JniedWKU. I've come close to actually losing my U a couple times, but I've always managed to hold on to it somehow.
latenight's link to the USFA site is the easiest breakdown I've ever found anywhere. But there are a few other minor details.
Say you have 64 people at an event, and their collective ratings (and their finishing order) make the event a C4 event. Presumably the first four finishers would earn a C.
But if there happen to be 2 A's, 2 B's, and 2 C's in there, and the 2 A's and 2 B's finish in the top eight, the event also falls into the A1 category. So the first-place finisher actually earns an A. In fact, the first nine places would earn the ratings from the A1 group, and 10 through 16 would get the E's indicated by the C4 group.
In other words, if an event matches more than one category, the fencers earn whichever rating is better between the two.
Also, if you don't improve (or at least renew) your rating, it drops a letter in the fourth (I believe) year. So even if I do manage to get an E some time, if I slack enough I'll eventually be able to regain my cherished U.

| I dunno what you edited out of there, sabreuse, but if it was about my screen name being close to yours, I'm sorry. I didn't realize someone had a name that close to this one...
y gracias, Miguelito
WKU, I agree with you profusely!
It's so hard to keep up that dang U

| Well, if any of you should lose your cherished U, I am willing to sell you my old one. I am not using it anymore. ( Not for another three years, at least! )

| What makes me more proud of that U is when I get my USFA card and it has
F: U01 E: U01 S: U01
Now, that is pride!
But in our club, we have a tradition (it probably exists in every club) but when someone gets a ratting other than the beloved U then we all pitch in and buy them the best dinner we can find. Needless to say me a hungry boy ;-)
Me thinks I'm going to turn to a new weapon for that rating. I've been toying around with Sabre, who knows

| Switching weapons just to get a classification?
If that doesn't work, you can get a trans-gender operation to become a female. Then you can try to earn your classifications in foil, epee, and/or sabre.
Then you can get your free meals! Awesome dude! |

| Won't work, 355.
Not enough women (at least in this Division) to get a rated tourney together.

| You know your a fencer when your willingto get a sex change to get a raiting.....
I don't think I would go THAT far, but who knows
But one of my coaches has started to teach me a little of sabre so that he would have someone to practice with. So I doubt I would be ready to even try to compete in it. That and I have no money to get that kind of equipment. So Foil A here I come!

| C'mon, (no offense to either gender here) but it has to be worth at least a couple of touches. And when the U is concerned you need every edge you can get. Right?

| Ratings are fairly generally overrated (no pun intended). If you're a good enough fencer you'll get the rating eventually in any case, and in many cases it's mostly a matter of opportunity. You fence well on the right day you get the rating, you fence poorly on the wrong day and you don't. A lot of times the difference is either the fencer just had things working on the correct day, or just competes enough that eventually one of those good days hits a sufficiently strong competition. Yeah, they're nice to have, they give you that warm happy feeling when you earn one, they'll make your job easier in the future, etc., but they really just don't mean all that much.
Just as true moving U to E/D or moving C to B/A.
