One of the most annoying things about the current system of giving out ratings is that if you are having a really good day you probably won't get one because you will beat the higher rated fencers before they make the magic cuttoff point in the DEs.
Only if another 4 not-as-good-fencers are also having really good days. Which would usually indicate that the higher ranked fencer is actually having a bad day rather than vice-versa. Besides, while frustrating when that 4th D gets upset in the round of 16 costing you a C, tournaments like that were marginally of the caliber required anyway. So don't sweat it, go out to the tournament the next month (or a week later in the next division) and earn it again. Or the month after that.
Incidently, regarding U's vs. A's, etc., my first ever tournament I was (obviously) a U. I won one bout that day, but it was against the B in my pool. Completely a stylistic matchup thing, we were both very active in the division for the sebsequent couple of years, ran into each other frequently at competition, fenced at the same club, etc., yet I never lost to him in probably 5-10 tournament bouts. By the end of this time I was up to a D, but most of it was spent as a U or E. Granted, he wasn't an A, but certainly things like that can happen, and it's not like I was a particularly GOOD U when I started. None of this fence for 2-3 years before starting competition.

Array Actually that doesn't bother me nearly as much as when it comes up to you(or me) VS one of the B's who need to make the top 8.
