Prise de Fer Memorial Day Round Robin - entry slots going fast! Last year, over memorial day weekend we hosted round robin events in all three weapons, Sabre on Saturday, Epee on Sunday, and Foil on Monday. The tournaments are run in the same fashion that NCAA championships are run, meaning, you are a member of a three person 'team' that travels together from strip to strip throughout the course of the day... Near Real-time standings and results are availalbe throughout the day by using our LCD projector and screen. After the round robin pool is complete, exhibition DEs are fenced for the top four men and top four women. Ratings are awarded based on the results of the large pool.
We also award a sword trophy to each top three weapon finish (men & women). Last year, Brad Baker was the only one crazy enough to fence all three weapons. It looks like he'll have some competition this year...
Due to the inherent lenghty-ness of this format, we were forced to limit entries for this years event. As of this posting, the remaning open slots are dwindling.
Epee has 43 people registered, and is going to be capped at 51 fencers
Foil and Sabre will be capped at 36 fencers and have 13 and 21 fencers registered (respectively).
You can pre-register for this tournament on askFRED: http://askfred.net/Events/whoIsComin...nament_id=1335
When events fill, we will take a waiting list, and I will be contacting people who have pre-registered to make sure they still intend on coming to the event.
Any open slots on the day of the event will be filled first come, first served.
If you have any questions, feel free to post them here or e-mail me.
thanks,

Array "inherent lengthy-ness"?!? Understatement of the year.
You may want to tell folks just how lengthy a day this is, dear, so they can plan accordingly. Maybe something along the lines of "Your pre-school children will have reached the age of consent by the time you make it home again." Or just a recap of how late things ran last year. -
Things will actually go smoother this year, because we are hiring referees this time around, and I'm tweaking the software so that the person who fences the last bout in the previous round isn't the first bout in the next round... little things like that will speed things up consdierably.
But since you asked... numbers and approx start / finish times
Sabre - start approx. 10:30AM entries - 27 - pool finish - 3:30PM - final awards - 5:00PM
Epee - start approx. 10:30AM entries - 41 - pool finish - 8:30PM - final awards - 10:00PM
Foil - start approx. 10:30AM entries - 25 - pool finish - 5:00PM - final awards - 6:30PM
This year registration will close at 9:00, it was 10:00 last year so that gains us an hour, and with the software tweak, that should get us about three minutes each round.

Array How far is PDF from Logan? I'm thinking about JetBlue-ing it, since I'll be in no condition to drive back to Rochester after 3 days.

darius Depends on how you get there. If you're getting picked up or renting a car, you can do it in maybe half an hour-45 minutes if there are no traffic delays. If you're relying on public transporation, you'd have to factor in the weekend subway (T) and train schedules. The Lowell line through Billerica doesn't run as often as one might like, but the station is just around the corner from PdF, which is a great thing. You can check it out here: http://www.mbta.com/traveling_t/sche...sp?line=lowell
Looks like the earliest train out of North Station arrives in North Billerica at 8:37 AM on weekends - which is cutting it pretty close. You might need a special dispensation from the Pope. -

Array .............quite a bit of effort.
i mean, before i just had to show up.
now, i have to suddenly become very very good..... -
This is much better. I feel like last year we finished epee pools at ten or so. It was so much fun though, so I didn't mind. Already registered. Can't wait! Thanks! It was a hell of a bout!
I got a good draw into the DEs; finally earned the elusive B by making the four, got greedy and earned that not-ever-considered-particularly-possible A.

darius Aw man, now you're going to be even more insufferable, aren't you? "If I were ever to challenge you to a duel, your best bet would be battle axes in a very dark basement." Misquoted from The Prisoner

Array It's a worthy threadjack I'd say. Especially seeing as how this conversation keeps bumping the thread up anyways, and there exists really no new information other than that spots are filling up quickly
Congrats on the A, meanwhile. For anyone else interested, here are full results: http://askfred.net/Results/results.p...903a8ba4c6b016 "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"

darius Don´t sell yourself short. A FRED search shows that in your previous foil event, you placed ahead of 10 fencers rated above you, including some A´s. So you had it in you all along!
Congratulations!
Have a nice time!
