| Can this be the future for US fencing? This weekend 850-900 New Jersey High school fencers competed in the 1st leg of the New Jersey high school season. The Santelli/Cetrullo tournaments showcased the 40 high schools with 3 weapon varsity programs that participate in HS fencing in NJ. That's right folks! I said 40 HS's with a minimum of 9 boys and 9 girls in a school supported varsity program. (Most of the schools have around 30-50 participants and some schools have over 100-150 active fencers.)
To no one's surprise two of the most successful programs emerged victorious , Milburn HS (Teddy Sherrill's alma mater) won the mens title and for the second year in a row, Columbia HS ( Ibtehaj Mohamed and Nicole Mustilli's old school) won the women's title.
Congratulations to all of the fencers, coaches, bout committee members, directors and most importantly all of the parents who foot the bills and show up to support the sport in New Jersey. |
