| diff. between Div-I and Div-IA? I should know this by now, but I need your help. Slogging through the documents at the USFA site often leads me in circles.
What's the difference between Div-I and Div-IA at Summer Nationals? What's the qualifying path for each? |

Div IA Qualify through sectionals or be a top finisher in last years summer nationals in various events.

| Div I is not part of the summer nationals. The information is clearly stated in the qualifying paths to national events in the USFA website. Go to documents -> Operations Manual -> Qualifying Paths to National Events.
Basically, Div I Nationals are for all people who have senior national points; some selected junior national points holders; some selected cadet national points holders; top-8 from previous year's Div I-A, top-4 from previous year's Div II, and winner from previous year's Div III (IIRC).
Div I-A is one (among 60+ other) events in the Summer Nationals. The primary qualifying path to Div I-A is top-30% (or 10, minimum) from each section's senior sectional championships; top-8 from last year's Div I-A, top-4 from last year's Div II, winner from previous year's Div III, some select number of junior and cadet fencers (again, IIRC).
The USFA website's description is most complete and clear.

But whatever floats your boat. |

</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Helvetica, Arial">That's not always the case, though. The date for Div 1 National Championships is determined by when World Championships is being held. In years when World Championships is being held relatively early (such at this year, starting next Saturday), Div. I Championships will be held earlier than Summer Nationals (it was in late April for 2002) so the team selection can be finalized with enough time for team members to train for W.Champs. In years when W.Champs is relatively late (such as next year, over the first week in October), it often will be held in conjunction with Summer Nationals. Since they're not always linked, however, they're considered separate events. For example, the 2002-03 schedule has separate entries for Div I Championships (6/27-29) and Summer Nationals (6/27-7/6), even though they're being run concurrently in the same venue.
When Div 1 Nationals was split off from the rest of the Nationals events (Div II, Div III, Youth, etc.), Div 1-A was created for the purpose of giving A and B fencers (especially those A's and B's who aren't qualified for Div. 1) an event to fence at the larger summer event.

| The national Over-50 and Over-60 championships are sometimes not part of Summer Nationals either, because of the dates of World Championships.
