I asked Dan DeChaine about this today at the Rose Condon.
1) Letters must be capital letters, 1cm wide brushstrokes. He mentioned block letters.
2) Letters must be between 8-10cm, and must be the same size within a name. He mentioned that some names are allowed to use different sizes by special permission, or to give the name in full on two lines, as opposed to abbreviating it, which is legal.
When asked about a test case like McDonald, where the C could be a capital letter and still not the same size, he said it could be done, but could also be denied for that reason at a World Cup. I did not ask if the name and country letters have to be the same size. -

Another foreign-language issue: Assume that the fencer has a name that can not be expressed in the latin alphabet, not even close. There are languages where names - and other words - consist of smacking and clicking sounds, totally impossible to write down with abc´s. Furthermore, some such languages lack a written form, making it even more difficult. What is a hypothetical fencer from such a language to do?
Have a nice time!

Peter Gustafsson How often do you run into bushmen or amazonian indians on strip? -

Suppose you have the last name McDonald. According to new December 2005 rules, (M.25.3.h) all letters must be capital and 1 - 1.5 cm wide. A Capital C and a small c look the same, just one is smaller. Would McDONALD pass if the c was at least 8 cm?
Also suppose the person doing the jacket uses l, instead of I. It probably would not pass the 1cm.
I am not sure of these 2 questions. On your question, I would say it should not be a problem, as long as the name had all the same height and the country had all the same height and they were between 8 and 10 cm. Where can I find the 12/2005 rules, the FOC and USFA websites only have the 9/2005 versions. -
Possibly on the FIE website. In french. Or, the British Fencing website. Similar Threads -
