Ya, I know what you mean friend. The jew-talk isn't common in the fencing community either. (well, I don't know if you are Jewish, but I am)

Yep. My Hebrew is very biblical and household, though - no fencing terminology :-(

My coach is a Jewish Ukrainian. Don't think it's that uncommon.

Is the Isreali olympic team any good (compared to other olympic teams)? And there are probably very few arabic jewish fencers (as in from Israel, not Russia) And yes, I realize that there could be a lot of eastern-european jewish fencers. I myself and half russian (and half Norse. VIKINGS!!!).

I only know a few of Israeli fencers.. Tomer Orr is a very good foilist who won Vancouver WC last year. Epeeist Alexei Cheremski (whom my present coach used to coach in both Ukraine and Israel) has been a force to reckon with on a senior world cup circuit for the last decade or so - but as far as I know he had retired and recently moved to the States to coach. He himself had anumber of really good students (Viatcheslav Zingerman -a very strong junior for the last couple of years was one of them if I'm not mistaken).

What about 4 Jacobsons? (David, Sada, Emily, and Jackie) ,
our coach is Ukranian Jew and I find it extremely common around here.
Of course it is all here, not there

I always knew of course that there was a lot of russian speakers in fencing, but the amount of people on fencing forum with the knowledge of the Old New Year really impressed me.

I haven't fenced in a couple of weeks. And anyway, Needle has provided reply already.

So, in favor of rejacking the jacked thread.

Does anyone know of a good reference for fencing terms, not just the names of the weapons? An ideal vocab list for the reference I mean would look something like:

    fencer - fextovats/fextovanka
    to fence - fextirovat'
    en guarde -
    halt -
    attack
    parry
    riposte
    no - nyet
    counter attack
    touch -
    right - prabiy
    left -leviy

    (etc etc etc)

I haven't been able to do much with it using just my dictionary and textbooks, so I'm starting to look on the web for the appropriate terms. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Fencing - fehtovaniye
    to fence - fehtovat'
    en guarde - prez? - alle! - K boyu! - Gotovy? Nachinajte!
    halt - stop
    Attack - ataka
    parade - zaschita
    riposte - otvet
touche - ukol/udar - although, someties you'll get reffing in French. Not too often.

    I found this page:

    http://club.fencing.ru/cntnt/menu/li...inologiya.html

Of course, though, now someone has to translate and provide a pronunciation guide....

Nice, Goofy - I posted same link couple of seconds after you did and decided to delete in the spirit of non-proliferation of duplicates

I can do the translation, but only if it's really needed - I mean, most people interested in Russian fencing terminology already know Russian to some degree and already know English fencing terminology - making the connection should not be that hard...
