Well, I've not seen the movie, but given my experience when I tried to read the books, I might be bored by it. Then again I didn't get my hands on any copies of the books until I was about 17 so it might be that I was just too old to really get into the books.

Although- I read Tolkein again when those movies came out and I still loved reading it (of course nostalgia may have something to do with that).

I liked the movie, I thought it was well made. I loved how the animals looked in it...

I enjoyed it. The banter between Mr and Mrs Beaver is first rate. There were moments where it teetered extemely slot to falling into outirght cheesiness. It also felt slightly rushed (I left with this vague notion of something being missed from the story) and I don't remember Father Christmas being in it (that might be me). Oh, yeah and the battles were bloodless (obviously). Other than that I enjoyed it. Tilda Swinton is excellent as the white witch, as is James Mcavoy as Mr Tumnus, and on the whole it is as I would have imagined it.

Hm. Father Christmas was in the book. When the children and Mr. and Mrs. Beaver start their journey, they run into a party of squirrels who are having a party and Father Christmas shows up. The squirrels only get turned into stone later.

However. Nobody ever claimed to believe in a "Free Narnia" in the book. That, I felt, was a little heavy-handed.

Edited to add: I hate CGI.

Ahhh ... I just couldn't remember it/him then. I suppose the problem is that I had was that I never found the story as appealong as LOTR. It never captured my interest in the way that other kids books did [when I was a kid]. I've got fonder and clearer memories of The Hobbit and The Phantom Toolbooth than I have for Narnia. I was talking to some friends and they have convinced my that I should go back and re-read them. The consensus is that The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is the weakest book - and let's not forget that it is the second book.

I agree that some of the ... sentiment ... was a bit OTT. Still enjoyed the film. I don't see how, without CGI, they were going to do the talking animals effectively.

I'm a huge fan of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I loved it when I was 8 (9?), and it turned me on to reading.

The movie was a good, faithful version of the book. Not a great movie, but a good one. It would've been great if James Earl Jones had been the voice of Aslan. I know, obvious and overdone, but Liam Neeson's voice was just lacking.

A minor point, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was the first book published. It's a complete story in and of itself. The book billed as first of the series currently, The Magician's Nephew was published/written 6th. I read them in published order way back. It wasn't until I was buying the book for my nephew that I noticed that they changed the order of the books to a chronological timeline of the books as opposed to the order written/published.

That said, in all the discussions (granted, there haven't been that many), The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has always been considered the strongest. This is why I feel that all the movie/TV versions have been of this story and not of the others...

i think they're easiest to read and enjoy if you read them in the order published.

or, at the very least, if you don't read magician's nephew first. i mean, i enjoy it a lot, but i didn't before i'd read LWW.

k, so, i finally saw it.

Liam Neeson's voice was kind of lacking..........

my biggest frustration was that all these cute little Brits are wishing father christmas "merry christmas".

and that's a rather small frustration. so i think i'll get over that.

but i do have to reread and then rewatch to see if there's anything else that annoys me.

This type of story is bullshiat. Same with LOTR and all the other fantasy crap.

A bullshiat fantasy world that we created where a guy can turn into a horse and then into a lion and then into a dragon etc....and now that it is on the big screen we have to act as though we are in awe.

The people who go for this stuff are natural born losers.

kate's reaction *a long speach about how merry christmas is antiquated and how the brits have modernized and we haven't*

Kate has spent more of her life in countries that are not the US, including quite a bit of time in England, Singapore, Hungary...............

and then we had a long discussion about how when it comes to the freezing point of water, i consistantly think in in degrees C rather than degrees F, even though i've always lived in the US............

Overall I think it was a good movie. Had some necessary changes from the book in order to make it flow better as a movie. Also added an extra action scene or two.

I bellieve the books should be written in the order they were published and not chronologically. There are things you learn in the Magician's nephew that take away some of the mystery from the other books. Just FYI the order of publication is 2, 4, 5, 6, 3, 1, 7. That's LWW, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew, then The Last Battle.

In my opinion the next movie they should make (Prince Caspian) is much more suited for a movie with many hollywood friendly aspects to it.

Who says Happy Christmas.... Seriously, who? Americans?

We only say Merry here, and i've only ever heard merry.
