ok, a few questions:

when did the tournament format change to the DE format??
when were the D and E ratings added??
was this before or after the tournament format change?
what were the event classifications and rating requirements like before the introduction of D and E?

thanks

The format change came sometime during the 90s.

The current ratings structure was around long before the change from all pools to pools + DE, although I can't vouch for the exact specifics of event classification rubrics over the years (having been away from fencing for a good chunk of time in the 90s).

PS Are you fencing at the FAU Invitational this weekend?

In 1991 the USFA was still using a format of multiple rounds of pools, but with a DE elimination table of top 8, or possibly 16 (I don't recall which.) In 1992-1993, the USFA changed to the 80% > DE Table format.

The total pool format was scraped by the FIE for competition sometime around 1980. I have watched tapes from DE finals from 1983, and I know that wasn't the first year of that format. Although, I'm pretty sure that the 1976 Olympic had a pool final.

I've known people who had D rankings in the 80's, but I'm not sure when the system changed.

Before

If you go back far enough, the AFLA had a system of ranking that was based on a combination of results and years fencing... or something strange like that. [/quote]

I believe D and E ratings were added around 1982 - presumably to allow better seeding of all those U's.

IIRC ratings pror to that were based on results (minimum two rated fencers and 18 warm bodies for a rated tournament) but there was no standard mechanism in place for decay of ratings that had not been reearned. Automatic decay of ratings was introduced about the same time as D and E ratings.

Edit: I think this was also about same the time that the AFLA became the USFA.

Here's our new divisional website. See you at Duel 'til You Drop next month? We're being encouraged to fence outside our division as much as possible.

i was always looking for something like that from goldcoast FL but only found central FL. i'm actually leaving FL permanently at the end of the month so this would be my last chance to fence the south FL epee studs.

i had a decent duel till you drop last year...going to miss it this time though

thanks mr. epee. that reminds of another question. i've heard of the pool only format that you said was scrapped at around '80 but there was also another "best of 3" 5 touch bout format that i saw from clips of the early 90's and this is what i was probably trying to ask in the beginning.

That was most likely part of a DE.

Fencers would be placed in the DE tableaux based on the results of the pool round(s) and the winner of each DE match would be determined based on a best-of-three series of 5-touch bouts with a one minute break between each bout. This was dropped in favor of the current 15-touch bout with a maximum score of 15-14 and one minute breaks at regular intervals.
