Perhaps I was overstating a bit when I said that, especially give I will never go to UMass, as I live in Amherst and don't even want to consider going to college in the same place I went to high school in. However, when I said "based on fencing alone" I didn't mean the competitively best team I could find. I love fencing, but if I'm not having fun it's not worth it. If I was going to compete on a team, I would want to be on a team like UMass, not just a bunch of people who happen to be competing for the same school. I didn't mean that UMass would be my absolute first choice, but it would definitely be up there.
As I make my choices about college I am looking at NCAA schools (fencing may not be my only criteria, but it's high on the list) I'm looking at schools with very good results, but that I'd probably never want to fence for because the fencers don't train as a team, or the coach doesn't seem like he or she would be a good match for me. To me a good coach and good teamates are more important that results alone. But hey, that's just me.
