Array 800N, 350N puncture test What exactly does this mean? What exactly does the piece of clothing (jacket, plastron, knickers) undergo for this test? I do understand that it's some measure of force in Newtons but what exactly? If it were a puncture test I would assume that it would be a measure of pressure, in that case I wonder what the standard area would be, a foil tip? -

Array The best answer is to look in the Apendix of the USFA Rule Book, page 69 - 72. As it is so large, I am not going to try and write it all down. With the USFA web site down, the best place to go is the Fencing Officials Web site http://www.fencingofficials.org/
For the FIE version, it is page 47 - 56 of the Material Section.
There are so many requirement beside the size of the probe and the presure, such as how long the material must be in the testing facility to acclimate, the tempeture and humidity, speed and length of the probe.
This is one time, I am going to say look it up.
I also suggest whenever a new rule book comes out, down-load it. Donald Hollis Clinton, Jr. DHCJr@juno.com

Knowing the rule book by heart means nothing, if you don't understand the rules. -
Someone from Leon Paul posted video of some testing of 350 NW and 800 NW material a few months ago. I have no idea where the thread is, but you might be able to find it with some searching and a little luck. -

That video was not any official testing, but rather was an unofficial demonstration to try to give a general idea on the strengths of the various fabrics. -

I've looked around and I can't find it yet. I'll try once more, and post it if I get it. -
