Yes. Believe it or not, I also wear t-shirts and athletic shorts which are not white ( black or grey, usually ). And blue shoe insoles. What all of these have in common is that they are worn UNDER the uniform and are not visible while fencing.

The plastron is gray because I got it from another fencer who was retiring from the sport and giving away all his gear...and it was pretty dingy and had a lot of rust stains on it. ( It's probably older than you are, MP! )

That is the usual reaction in polite society...as opposed to exclusive in-groups. Such small pleasantries cost nothing and are the grease which lubricates a civil society. And keep one from being criticized on bulletin boards.

I thought the tournament went pretty well (especially for my opponents, and not for me). Besides the usual complaining about the font size and lack of a good projector, the anouncements were clear, venue was pretty warm, enough chairs, and enough space to walk around. Kudos to Fencing Institute and W. PA. Fencing.

About the weather & scheduling: when travelling, people try to maximize both time and money -- they forget about the reason and importance until something goes wrong. If it's that important to you, then you must sacrifice both/either time and money to be there on schedule; otherwise it's not that important, quit sniveling. ;-)

1 complaint that's not really the organizer's fault. $3.75 for a sports drink!?!?!? Concession stand stood for THEIF. I left, made a 2 minute walk, brought Gatoraid at the convenient store. It's just the principle of the matter. Oh yeah, no vegetarian food at the concession stand either...

Oops, mistake, and so, we just moved over. I myself enjoyed refereeing that event immensely - espeically since it was the only sabre event I got to do all weekend. Somehow it seems that the FOC has decided that they're giving me the chance to develop skills in each of the weapons - this weekend it was epee until my eyes bleed! Albequerque they pushed me in foil until I begged for mercy. I'm hoping this means that Houston will be a sabre-heavy weekend for me...

Anyway, though, I do want to appologize to the ladies who were subjected to that young referee. He wasn't just bad, he was scared and completely subject to the mildest suggestion. He needs CLUB level practice refereeing, and a lot of it. A world team point event is not the place for him to learn about being a referee. When I saw just how out of his depth he was, I immediately went to the FOC and told them that there was a problem. Like you said, DivI Men's was going on at the same time, and attention was being focused over there (because of the usual shenanagins by the usual suspects). I perhaps should have been more emphatic. I about dropped to the floor in surprise when they sent him out to do DE bouts (albiet under "supervision).

But the semi's and gold of that event were quite enjoyable to referee. I always love it when there are tactics displayed on strip!

I personally think that the young referees did well. There were experienced directors observing the younger directors, and for the most part, the younger directors met the approval of the more experienced directors. They knew the right of way calls, they appeared to be confident in their calls, and they knew the rules. They show promise in their directing.

I was the violinist who played to open that tournament... i was yelled at on both saturday and sunday for being late, although I arrived once at 7, and once at 7:15, and stood around waiting for them to get back to me and tell me where and when to play. i think they decided that there was no one who was ever in the right, other than them of course. they also seem to lack that thing called observance. we puny ants dont deserve their attention
