    Hi from Sunnyvale, California

Anyone remember the movie WarGames? The city they war-dialed (had the computer dial each number to look for modems) was Sunnyvale, that's actually why I moved here. Really! I've tried fencing a couple of times, generally got as far as learning, sort of, what a lunge is and that blade tapping thing, then for general reasons stopped there, busy or something. But this area (bay area) seems to be crawling with fencing clubs and maybe it's a good way to stay in shape. Um, get back in shape. So I'm going to give it a try again at "the fencing center", maybe I'll stick with it this time!

Ha, I remember that (from 'War Games'), that's actually what caught my attention with your post.

Anyway, welcome back to the sport, hope you stick (ha-ha) with it.
    Fencing is my only PvP.

Thanks, I never really got going with it, was too busy or too broke or both. This area seems to be crawling with fencing activity and once I learn the particulars of the electric equipment I may be able to build/sell those little body cords and stuff to help pay for the cost of the lessons and so on.

"War Games", huh? I don't remember that part. I was probably too freaked out by the concept of the movie. When I think of Sunnyvale, I think of Lumisys film digitizers. Go figure. Geek.

When I think of SunnyDALE, I think of slaying vampires.

Anyway, welcome back to the sport and the forum. The Bay Area is indeed blessed by many clubs. Shop around - I hear they vary a lot.

Yes, my guy in my club (ha ha first lesson tonight) was making noises like starting me in something other than foil
so we'll see. Tons of clubs here though! And he was asking "what I want to get out of fencing" or whatever the wording is, I said I want to train, and to compete, I mean, that's what you do in most sports, you train and you compete.

On Sunnyvale, yeah, for a certain age of geek, WarGames was a formative experience. Betcha don't remember the password to change the grades was "pencil" either hehe. What's funny is, I lived in Colorado Springs for a few years and never visited NORAD. I hate myself sometimes. You gotta do stuff because you may not have the chance - to give an idea, I was passing through Boulder City once and wanted to see the dam, was considering spending the night there and taking the 'hard hat' tour, but I wimped out and went on home. 9/11 came along and no more hard hat tours for everyone. I did get to go to one 'open house" at Cal Tech's JPL and that was really something - they put the open in open house, you could see all kinds of stuff and even end up in places you're not supposed to. It was great, and I went with 2 different groups through the mission control place, cool! Well, that was in about August, 2001. Last ever.

Ramble ramble ramble .... I guess I don't want to look back 30 years from now and wish I'd given fencing a serious go.
