    Canada has no government

I just read on the news that Canada's government just got fired. So who's running the show now? Who's paving the roads, paying the troops and passing the laws?

I admit to being completely perplexed by how parliamentary systems work.
Just because you have the right, that doesn't mean it is right.

I haven't heard about this, but I'm guessing that the opposition parties managed a vote of no confidence in the ruling coalition. If that happens then usually the parliment is required to desolve itself, and sometimes a general election will be held.

Like I said, I don't know what's going on in Canada, but I highly recommend brushing up on parliamentary systems. There are usually some pretty awesome internal dynamics. For example: Germany's new leader is head of a coalition that has some fairly far right and far left parties working together (sort of).

Mr. Epee is right. They had a no-confidence vote last night which dissolved the current government. Now there will be a general election on January 23, 2006 to determine the next government.

It's just an election, is all. All dissolving parliament does is to prevent new laws from being passed. Everything else still goes tickity-boo.

In Canada, the Governor General is the head of State and Parliament is subordinate to Her. She has the power to form and dissolve government at any time. As the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, all military matters occuring during an election would conceivably fall to Her. By convention, any decision that could be reserved until Parliament is resumed, is.

She could, were the crisis significant, merely appoint a Parliament if required, though the precedent has never occured. Presumably She would merely put everyone else back in Parliament until the crisis passed, then dissolve Parliament again for elections. By convention, all cabinet posts and parliamentary duties are still held until new ones are appointed by the PM. So we still have a PM and ministers of the various ministries until a new PM is appointed after the election. Then they go and change everything. It's just that nobody does anything because they figure it'll get undone if someone else ends up in the post.

Tim Horton's is all right... but they just can't beat Dunkin Donuts. In my town, we have a great Dunkin Donuts, and then a Bess Eaton moved in next door to it. They didn't do very well- usually the only cars in the parking lot were the employees'. Then Tim Horton's took over the Bess Eaton, and it's the same way. Sure, they have some okay stuff, but they're no competition for Dunkin Donuts.

With Christmas coming, parliment will be breaking for the holidays anyway. Not much happens this time of year anyway....

Although having Latenight invade with his floorball buddies... taking beer, and donuts... (and perhaps a few willing women) as booty would liven things up!

Which is why you're living south of the border.

    Heathen.

    *grin*

Besides, everyone knows that Tim Hortons is vile, disgusting vomit-in-a-cup. No sane person would move to a place that so idolises it. Much better to stick with the vastly superior Dunkin' Donuts product.

It's funny where I, and jBirch, live is a largely conservative province so of course they support the conservative party.

The local media has had headlines like "Liberals losing lead" and "Canadians Clear the Way for Conservatives".

Then, you read national media like the CBC, www.cbc.ca, or The Globe and Mail, http://www.theglobeandmail.com, and it doesn't inform you of the coming Conservative government ...

I'm going to be really interested in the outcome. And pray that my local media, as usual, are a bunch of neo-con nitwits that couldn't predict their way out of a family values convention.

I only listened to the news a brief time this morning and heard nothing about this on it. I'm sure the news on Ottawa was in there somewhere... it was just crowded out by the big news... We got snow!… unfortunately not enough to get to stay home.

    Pffft.

The Vancouver idea of "snow" is 1-3cms. If that.

Hey... you know it's spring when the snow melts... to us, it just means it's lunchtime!

Actually, in Southern Alberta, snow melts for pretty much no reason at all. It melts in January and it melts in August. It melts in "Spring" (by which, of course, you either mean End-of-Winter or Beginning-of-Summer, Alberta only having two seasons seperated by a couple of weeks of bad hockey) and it melts in "Fall" (by which, of course, you mean Start of Winter or End of Summer). Of course, it comes in Winter and it comes in Summer too.

Besides, none of us has a candle to hold on New Brunswick. I was there during the Ice Storm a couple of years back and it snowed THIRTEEN FEET in one night. It was increadible.

BTW, I've been hit by stale timbits so stop throwing them around. They REALLY hurt.

I heard on the news, just this morning, that the Liberals were ahead in the polls.

As Gavin Crawford said, "This is why they'll never form the government."

It also snows for no reason at all... Canada Day/July snow falls... snow in August... the only place I know where you can get eaten alive by mosquitos then wake up to a dumping of snow on your tent... but that's okay because the tornado blew it off...
