This is where the Japanese say, "Gabatte!!!!"

Misha and Edew are dead-on about the numbers, expectations and assessment of the predicament. Earlier this week, a "heads-up" e-mail was sent out to the Pittsburgh referees by an FOC Rep. Very honest and detailed information on what to expect in terms of projected time to finish as well as the "game plan." It lays out the best-case-scenario, and it looks grim.

It seems the main focus of Friday will be to get through Men's Epee pools (single flight) and reduce the field ASAP. At least first 5 hrs of Friday will be operated under strip deficiency mode. So we will be doing some major hustling, it seems. How soon the other events can catch up will depend on how quickly the Men's Epee field is reduced.

So, all the referees... Please go wild on every time-saving technique you have! Epee fencers..... We would greatly appreciate abundant use of P A S S I V I T Y whenever possible!

Disclaimer: I am in no way, shape or form involved with the organization of the event. Just a hard working referee.

There was a joke floaing around in Albuquerque about how the tone of the daily referee meeting changed from morning to morning:

Day 1: "Please, let us strive for excellence."
Day 2: "We have a very very long day ahead of us, please do what you can."
Day 3: "Please, please, stay alive!" (this day's meeting actually started with tips on how to survive the 5,000+ ft ASL elevation and arid desert climate!)
Day 4: "How many of us will be here after lunch?"

The mentioned e-mail to the referees, btw, beats NM. It includes the following line, which of course, should be taken in humor:

"Please do not cancel your ticket once you have digested the details...we need you."

btw.... The expression on the title means, "Fight!" Loosely translated, it's a Japanese encouragement... along the line of "Do your best!"
When you have three Romulan Warbirds blocking the escape route, Worf has an emotional breakdown about his childhood toy, Riker announces he's gay, Data's positronic brain gets a virus, and Geordi quits because he's had just one too many imminent warp core breach.... Just sit back, breathe, and follow these simple steps:

    Offhand, what does this entail?

Epee fencers - passivity indeed, but only if the referee will call it. If they appear dedicated to making it last every second, double up to 4 and then pentathalize it.

It shows that FOW Rep. is more competent
than whoever defines starting times for events

Do you have some kind of quota on
how many black cards you have to award?

You know that hustling will make things worse,
    not better, do you?

especially in divisions where it's very difficult to get an A or B............
    I agree, to an extent--

I wasn't trying to sound elitest or anything, because I know there are some very good C's out there. My reasoning was this: 1) There is no overlap for B's or A's (and if you count Div 1 Summer Nationals as well as Div 1A, it is possible for there to be a triple overlap for C's). 2) Events are getting huge and this would be the least complicated means of narrowing the field a little. 3) I know of a few B's that have actually made top 32...though the vast majority are A's. I have not seen or heard of a C with national points.

Keep in mind, this idea was only if something had to be done.

I actually an example. Last year, there was a Canadian WF (Kwan) who made top 16 at a Div 1 NAC, and she had a C going into the tournament. I can think of a couple other WF with Cs who narrowly missed making 32.

    It can happen.

If you are a foreign fencer sent by your country's Fencing Federation and do not have FIE points comparable to American A's, they give you a C for seeding. That is not a real C.

In Senior World Cups, the top 16 don't have to fence pools.
A similar thing could work with NACs with two rounds of pools. The top 16 could sit out the first round of pools and then be seeded into the second round of pools to determine seeding for DEs. It would not lighten the load completely but could be considered for future NAC competitions.

Not true. Sorry, this is a bit of a digression from the thread topic.

Canada has As, Bs and Cs as well (and Ds and Us, but no Es), although they are earned differently. When entering NAC tournaments, Canadian fencers (as opposed to other international fencers) are given ratings based on their ratings they have in Canada. For example, in general a Canadian fencer is required to have a Canadian C before they will be allowed to fence at a Div 1 NAC. (There have been some exeptions, but I won't get into that.)

At local level US tournaments, Canadian fencers often earn American ratings, and then these US ratings are used by the local US tournament organizers to seed these tournaments.

The particular fencer I am using as an example had both an American C and a Canadian C upon entering the Div 1 NAC, and then finished in the top 16. There were other Canadians present who had Canadian Bs and who lacked FIE points, and were seeded as Bs, not Cs.

Which makes sense, given they are called "North American Cup"s.

I appreciate your clarification regarding Canadian fencers in particular. However, that is what occurs for other international fencers including from other countries in North America.

They tried something similar a few years ago. The DivI's were two-day events and the top 16 got byes through the 1st day (to match the wc format). It really made travel plans tough when you were on the cusp. But I liked the idea of having the same format.
Anyone remember why they changed again?

For exactly the reason you cited -- 2-day events are horrible logistically for fencers, coaches, officials, etc., etc.
