Great actions you've done that you'll always remember?

Just wondering guys.. I only have one.

I was fencing this guy at a competition in DE, and this was the second last touch (too bad it wasn't the last) and he did an attack which I parried in four. He started running backwards and I chased him down the strip while holding him in four. I did a bolestra (no idea how to spell this), to slow me down and break distance a bit, and as he was coming in to regain distance control I did a fleche and nailed him. This was in my second year, so it was HUGE for me. Anyways, do you guys have any actions that you'll probably remember for the rest of your lives?

2 events

1) I was directing some friends in a bout, my friend went in for a lunge, and the blade went UNDER The bib, and INTO the throat!

No puncture, but the windpipe almost collasped, my other friend was in the hospital, and couldn't eat hard foods for 2weeks. But he's all better.

2). Gettign nailed in the nads. Before the days of my Cup!

That has to be my Matrix-style riposte.... It was in a DE (which I ended up losing) and I was being chased down the strip. Instead of going off the end, as a last resort, as he launched his attack, I jumped as high as I could and brought my feet up, and his attack went right under my feet! I made a riposte right across the arm and landed again upright. That was one of those moments you see in slo-mo. It also elicited a nice "whoa!" from the spectators nearby. Havent been able to do it again though.... definetly a once-in-a-lifetimer.

That really gives me an idea. What is the ruling if I were to do that in Foil. Can I jump and score a flick?

Cause i've jumped back and up from a lunge, then flicked....

But can I actually try a matrix move like yours in Foil? Epee?

OK, not a great moment, but memorable for it's humor: fencing dry sabre in '85, I take a hit on my ungloved left thumb nail, unseen by the touch judges. I've counterattacked head at the same time, hitting with a loud CLANK. As the ref calls, "Attack is no, counter lands head, touch left," my head is swimming from the pain in my thumb. As soon as he awards the touch to me, my first instinct is to put my extremely sore, and now nail-less, thumb in my mouth, which I do as fast as I can. BUT I'M WEARING MY MASK!!! My thumb gets jammed into my mask, and I holler, "Youch!" adding insult to injury! My teammates laughed, and most, including the touch judges were confused. Bill Goering was the referee, and after the bout, I explained to him what had happened. He chuckled mildly, as I recall, while I found my thumb nail on the side of the strip.

The last one I did that I'll remember is I was fencing one of the fencers at EMU who came back from a being at an olympic training camp for a month or so. He had been taught to use a really low stance and do fleches off of it. As he was rushing me I did a flying 7 parry jumped over his sword and hit him with an angulated thrust in second as we were both going by. Thats the first acrobatic move I've tried so far I think.

I had this 2 touches in this one bout that are burned into my brain because they were apropos, funny, and spoke volumes about spectators and fencing.

I'm fencing the gold medal match of an epee tournament that was pretty large. Had over 30 fencers from several different states, so there was a sizable audience. Mid-bout, the score is close I'm up 6-4, and my opponent is confusing me.

Minute break - my coach tells me that I'm overthinking my opponent, and that my opponent has only one action, which consists of running at me. I'm skeptical, but say OK, I'll see what happens.

2nd period, at the command fence, my opponent charges, as my coach said he would. I'm still thinking about it all, and almost caught completely flat-footed. Almost. I make a total oh-sh!t action, and make prime riposte, flick to the back. One light touch for me. My opponent mutters in disbelief 'he hit me in the back...', the audience oohs, aahs, and claps.

As I go back on guard, I understand what my coach was telling me, this opponent has nothing on me. I use my footwork, set my opponent up and make this gorgeous, long lunge to the body. I caught my foe so off guard, he doesn't move his feet, or even attempt to parry. It was a beautifully set up action, that was executed perfectly, the audience remains silent and unimpressed by this.

Afterwards, no one remembered my attack, just my flick, except of course one of my friends who knows how I fence.

AHHHH! Two things I can think of here. Neither, particularly important, yet I will never forget them.

First, One of my first tournies at Notre Dame. If you have ever been there, you know that there in not a lot of extra room around the pistes. I was fencing one of my own clubmates when the action was ahlted near my end of the strip. When action resumed, I think I forgot how close I was to the end and one foot stepped off. No biggies, except another fencer had stowed their bag right there. So, when I stepped off I went directly into that bag which sent me off balance. I believe I created a new dance step inmy attempt to not break anyone's equipment or go out all the way. Unfortunately, I did go out all the way and since the score was at 4--4, my opponent won..!

Second, In Chicago at Fencing 2000, a pulled a young man in my DE. As I stood talking with hiim before the bout we were kidding around when he "ma'amed" me. (Honestly, I'm NOT THAT OLD!)
This led to a little verbal sparring which ended with me saying, "Oh well, I have nothing to lose."
I went into the DE with that attitude and when the director called "Fence," I went charging down the strip and hit him as I passed, SCREAMING, "DU LAC!" This in itself raised a few eyebrows, but it sure felt good. Later in the match, my opponent went into the low line, I assume trying for my knee, so I went low also. Then I charged in as he did too. Again I sreamed,"DU LAC" as I rushed pased him and I got the touch. Sounds good, huh? Well as I returned to my end of the strip, I saw the poor guy grab himself and drop to the floor. Everyone was watching, I mean EVERYONE. Well, I didn't win that match, but the young man promised me that he wouldn't ma'am me any more and that next time we met he would be wearing a cup. The director said I had a lot of spirit......LOL.

This isn't really a spectacular touch, nor one of my best probably, but it's in my memory right now as it just happened last night.
I was at a different club for open fencing night, and was fencing with a guy I'd just met last week. I'd been playing around all night with things I don't normally do, so I figured I'd use this bout for the same purpose.
Off of "fence!" I did a lightning small advance, lunge, so that I was as far away from my opponant as I possibly could be and still expect to land an attack. As such I was so stretched out from my lunge I was very low to the strip, but just high enough to connect my mask with his sabre. I landed on his flank and it was called simultaneous.
This gave me an idea. Off of the next "fence!" I did the same thing, only in addition to a long lunge I crouched down a bit. I again connected with his flank, and when I looked up, I saw only one light on, and his bellguard hovering above my head.
"I missed his head" he said.

Not spectacular, but really interesting at the time.

Semi Finals with me up 13-11. Opponent takes the initiative finally and launches a hail merry at my knee. I leap in back in mid air with my legs moving away from his body while my torso leans forward. I hit him on the wrist as he advances close to me.

I fenced the same chap in the pools and I pulled the same move on him. He oohd and ahhd about it. He told me after the bout, which he won 5-4, that I had to have very strong legs to do that and it was amazing that I could land on balance everytime.

I've had many great touches and matches but 2 stand out.
1) When I was fencing in Western Australia, against an accomplished foilist in an eppe bout. I had pulled every move I knew and I was leading 14-7. I knew I had to get him and get him quickly. This guy is a thinking fencer. He had read all my moves and I could not use them a second time. The end result 15-14, my loss. It was the most invigorating bout I've ever had, and I didn't mind losing.

2) When I was fencing the No. 1 epee fencer in Singapore a few of years ago. The move : beat flick to wrist as a fient, followed by an octave bind on his attempted stop hit.He disengaged that one, and I immediatly stepped in with a prime parry to hit him in the thigh. result my bout 15-11.

One move I am fond of using against overly aggressive fencers is something of an inquartita, but not quite. I will start fencing on the right side of the strip. If my opponent doesn't move to the right of the strip too, then I've a significant advantage. As he attacks, his point is coming at me at an angle. This means that all I have to do is side step with my lead foot and he misses and I hit to the body.

There was one foil bout about 9 months after I started where I lunged in mid-air, disengaged, and hit under the arm. I haven't done that since.

Back in '97, I attended a local tournament. I was an E96 at the time. Couldn't flick, and certainly couldn't defend against it. But I was tired of being nailed on the back by those who could.

So I'm up against a guy who would take your attack in a big, sweeping prime, and chase you down the strip waiting for you to remise so he could land one on your back. I make my attack with lunge, recover forward and remise. His riposte misses. Worked enough for me to beat him 5-3. Got a great seed, and made it all the way to the final, where I ran up against a fencer (Glen Buchelle) who was not at all impressed at my ability to step in. Lost 15-2, but still earned my D.

Nah, I like D'Artagnan just fine

Well I thought it was cool because no one at my club had ever done anything remotely like that. My opponent was so stunned that he sat there and watched me hit him.
