Well, I won't pretend to be an expert, but there are a few things that you should drill into your brain early on. Just a few things that I had particular trouble with when I began.

    It's all in the wrist.

Eyes on the opponent, not the foil/sabre/epee they are weilding.

    One foot at a time!

No grabbing your opponents foil/sabre/epee and then beating them with yours. Especially if your opponent is your instructor.

Make sure your hair will stay out of your eyes.

    Show no fear.

That's really all I can think of right now. But you should remember all of it in case you ever learn to fence.

I wouldn't say it's all in the wrist. More like the fingers. Tip control is very important, and you do a lot of fine tuning with the fingers. Let me guess, pistol grip?

And welcome to the boards. All you really need in order to start fencing is an open mind, and a desire to learn. To find out where to fence, check out the USFA website at www.usfencing.org.
