Differences between SF and CF equipment

I'm fairly new to fencing, and I'm currently using equipment that the salle provides during lessons. In January I'll most likely be signing up for my first foil competition between the locals of the CF community, but I'd like to buy equipment that I can use for SF as well. Other than a foil, what other peices of equipment will I need to pay special attention to?

I'll need a mask, jacket, nickers, and foil in order to compete. What kind should I buy, that would hopefully double as CF and SF gear, while being affordable?

All that stuff should be pretty much interchangeable; you'll just need to supplement it with electrical equipment when you make the move to SF [if you choose to in the end]. But invest in good equipment now (350N or FIE jacket, underarm protector, pants & FIE mask); you'll be glad you did later.

The CF competition will not require a plastron? You'll need it for SF. As you'll be fencing foil, the only additional gear you will need beyond the clothing is electric foils, body cords, and a lame.

Some CF salles use point-d'arrettes for epee, but as far as I know there wouldn't be anything particular for foil...

Are you learning classical french or italian, and where do you live?

I'm in Salem, Oregon. My salle isn't purist, so they teach a mix of french/italian. I'm a mutt! ^_^

Cool. I also learn both schools. I find both are very useful in different ways when competing in SF.

I've only done epee, because it is the closest to CF in SF. Italian is lovely for opposition, counterattacks, infighting angles, et c. and french helps with point control and precision blade movement.

Epee also does not require as much electric paraphenalia, and you are not at the mercy of the "ref"'s interpretation of RoW.

Good luck, have fun, and let us know how you do!

Go for FIE standard, ie, 800N + 800N, 350n is to close to a death-wish when it comes down to safety...

That is an exageration, given the number of people injured with 350N gear or less compared to those wearing it.

In SF the women's jackets are significantly smaller than the CF women's jackets.

I'm talking girth not just bosom.

Trust me, I'm a pro.

Exactly.

[controversial point ahead]

There is ONLY fencing.

Get the best you can afford.

Unless the gang you hang around with are using broadswords - you should be ok.
