Actually she took 3rd. She was one of only two people rooting for me in my round of 8 bout. Anyone else ever been in a bout with an entire salle rooting against you?
If not for Airathanas and another fencer from her club, which happens to be very closely tied to mine, I might have lost the bout from sheer discouragement.

Yes. At my own club, too.
It was either the final or semi-final, and one of our cadet fencers whom I had been helping to train was beating me. I don't think (at the time) that he had ever taken me out in a DE bout. The entire room was cheering for him except one guy. It was quite amusing. My opponent gets a touch: entire room explodes in cheering. I get a touch: absolute silence in the room, broken by one voice saying, "Yay!"
