    Where are the classics?

Ah, what is the state of education? Latin was the best course I ever took for understanding my own Standard American English. From Caesar to Louis XIV, Latin was the language of commerce, diplomacy, and culture. Greek was a standard second language, as that was the language of medical and mathmatic texts. Now, Greek has disappeared from many curricula. I never got the chance to take it. I suppose my salutation has attracted the history buffs.

Fencing is the universal language. I don't speak Chinese, but I can understand Chinese as long as they're talking about fencing. No kidding, I really can. It's awesome.

    The common thread

True, fencing is the common thread to this entire group, and the terms are nearly universal. French is the language of modern fencing. This is not too hard for those of Western European extraction. Thanks to William the Conqueror most of the words concerning conflict in English have French-Latin roots. However, with the rise of a strong fencing program from the most populous nation on Earth, China, is it time to re-evaluate?
Asking Westerners to learn the character alphabet and the subtle sound variations of Chinese might be asking too much. Also, which Chinese would be learned? Would it be the state language of Mandarin, or the popular movie language of Cantonese? A compromise based on the current world could then be considered.
French as the language of fencing has a historical precedent. Through the novels of Dumas, many associate the great exploits of the sword with the Royal Musketeers of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Yet, most of the developers of the conventions of fencing were Italian. Should fencing then be conducted in Italian? That could be very pretty.
More practically, should the language of fencing be English? English is the language of world commerce and communication. Throughout the world one can find popular Americanisms or Britishisms in ads or television shows. English is fast becoming a required course in schools throughout the world.
The problem then is that living languages are always prone to change and interpretation. Something as simple as 'is' can be subjective. The answer might then be the one that was taken by the international scientific community, Latin. Cibus pro cogitatum.
