Array Who is coming to the Pittsburgh NAC? Hopefully this is the first post about this. We still have a couple of weeks but entry deadlines have passed.
I am coming
Men's Saber Div 1
so much pain... -
Fencing Expert
Array I'll be there coaching and fencing (D1WE, perhaps some D1WF for the former, D1MS for the latter). No refereeing for me for a change.

Array I'll be watching or possibly volunteering. There are a couple of members on the board from that area. Perhaps they would be interested in arranging a 'social' occassion.... "Since when does being a patriot in America mean shutting your mouth?"

Array I'll be there fencing (div 1 MS) supporting friends/team mates who will be fencing their first div 1 nac (MS and ME) and in general just seeing people I don't see that often and watching lots of fencing. Array I will be there for Div I MS and Vet MS, hence the whooole weekend. Faugh! I don't even own any clothing suitable for cold and snow...
At least my stint in Div I should be mercifully brief. -

Array Maybe Div I WS, maybe 40+ WS, definitely 50-59 WS. I'm registered for all three but Div I is just for entertainment and so is 40+, so I can bag either if I feel like it. Whee!!!!!
I'm in Pittsburgh now, actually (conference for work). "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. -

Array I will be there for Div I ME. My first national competition, eek. Nothing like trial by fire, I guess The only way to atone for being occasionally a little over-dressed is by being always absolutely over-educated. -Oscar Wilde -

Array Yep, I'll be there, refereeing whatever the FOC hands me...
I just hope and pray for slightly less strenous conditions than Albequerque! That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again. -

As for me? Can't go, gotta work. Craps, as they say in Vegas. But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. -

While I don't necessarily disagree with you, and at the same time don't want to get into high-level-fencer-bashing, I'd be interested in what you mean by this, if you cared to elaborate. Array I won't be able to make Pitt as I'm scheduled to work that weekend. Craps, as they say in Vegas. But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. -

Array I'll be there for D1Mf, friends, and family. Expect a big numbers for this one. The last Pittsburgh NAC had a record turnout. -

I don't mean to bash; in fencing, you should do what works to win the bout, and that's what the top fencers are doing. But much of the up-and-coming generation of sabre, and even some of the guys that have been there for a while, don't fence with determination. They don't go on the strip to dominate their opponents, but to scrap it out touch by touch. They don't make the bout happen, but they just move around, reacting, and hoping/forcing something to happen. I admit this a very ambiguous description, but a lot of fencing is conceptual.
And it works for them -- they win. Albeit their wins are fragile, but they still win.
This is true even in the top tier of world sabre. After watching a world cup/championship final bout, you (and I guess I'm speaking mainly for myself) don't get the feeling that there was a clear winner. There wasn't one fencer to control the other and dominate the bout. They just kinda did some stuff, taking minimal risks, and maybe one had a slightly better parry or one was feeling a little quicker in the simultaneous.
To me, and strictly to me, this is boring fencing and fencing lacking in creativity.
There are a few sparks here and there, though. It will take someone with imagination and guts to change the way most sabre fencers think about the weapon. -
