| pricing hey everyone, Im kind of new to fencing, and I joined the college club team a month or two ago. I want to start getting my own equipment, but i dont know if I really want the more expensive stuff. I looked at this websites store, and middle jacket was three times the cheaper one. I assume its worth the extra money if its still at such a higher price, but could anyone tell me the difference between jackets/lames etc as price goes up? Sorry if im not being specific enough I just want to know what I should expect if I go for the more expensive stuff. |

For international competing (perhaps in the future for you since you're still new to the sport ) you'll need a jacket that withstands at least 800 N. If you can afford it I suggest you buy that.
I'm not sure what the requirements are for national competing within the US -- I'm sure someone will come here and tell you -- but whatever you do, do get a jacket that is marked at least 350 N!
This forum is a great place to find out about all things fencing, but I also advice you to not purchase any fencing equipment on your own, before talking to your coach. He/she may have good advice. Some clubs also have a discount from a certain dealer.
Oh, if you plan on buying your own mask then this is the thing you should not be cheap on. It's going to protect your head!
Please also take a look in the Product Review section of this forum!

| just look up all the old threads regarding this topic, try equipment, what to buy etc. that s how i build up my knowledge of what to get in the end. as Zilverzmurfen said, this forum is prolly the best place to be! welcome
also, look up different manufacturers and see how they compare to each other. the more you know about gear etc in general, the easier it will be for you to make the "right" choice for yourself! (right as in as right as it can be that every one agrees that its a good kit.... NEVER gonna happen. but as long as you like it you ll be fine!)
have fun, and enjoy fencing!

| Feel free to give a call to 877-452-8024. Someone at the F.Net office will be happy to talk to you about the differences and answer your questions in real time.
I assume that you were looking at the line of beginner jackets from Absolute that we're carrying vs. the Competition (350N) and FIE (800N) ranges of jackets from Leon Paul.
The main differences are: Certifications for protection, materials and finishing/construction.
Just as you'll pay more for a Land's End shirt than an Old Navy shirt, you'll pay more for some brands of fencing clothing than others.
In my experience, the Leon Paul clothing is made with the most quality touches - double stitching, excellent materials, finished seams, etc. That extra labor adds a bit to the price, but not out of the range of other similar products.
The beginner range clothing is that - it's for beginners who need the basic protective gear but aren't committed to fencing for several years and so don't need to spend the extra for the comfort and durability that the higher range products may offer.

I don't think The USFA has a newton rating for national competitions. if they do can someone send me a private message telling me what it is and where to find it in the rules? |

| D+F+P - Can you show some evidence of this? I've never seen a USFA requirement on durability, only words like "robust contstruction" which tell nothing specific.
HotShot - Where are you located? Depending on your location, there may be a local vendor who can help you try on equipment and decide what you need. |
