Cadet NAC's I don't understand why they make NACs for school-aged people DURING school. It makes it very hard to get to when they make it on a weekday. Do you know why they do this? They want people to be dedicated or whatever, sure, but I doubt the USFA wants to take people out of school. Not that I particularly would WANT to be in school, but some parents won't want to take their kids out of school just for a fencing competition. Well, maybe the ultra-competitive parents do... I dunno.

Yes, it is difficult taking my kid out of school for a tournament, but at least the USFA tries to help - tournaments tend to be scheduled on national holidays. I also believe fencing is just as important as the so-called glamour sports of high school - football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. I have taught high school and I know those last few periods are a revolving door - everyone gets out early for something or another. My criteria for attending a tournament (besides the $$) is my kid's grades. BTW, I'm not ultra-competitive, my kid is. -
sorry if I sounded mean in the ultra competitive thing. I didn't mean to. I guess I'm just kind of frusterated that I won't be able to make the NACs probably because of school. I get good grades, and have done school sports in the past. I only get out of school for vacation 1 day a year, and that's to go volunteer out of state. My parents are big on keeping me in it and not having me fall behind in my work. I shouldn't be complaining, but I guess it just frusterates me. They don't like the idea of missing one or more days of school for sports (Even if I am doing fencing for independent study PE). I'm an extremely competetive person, and maybe that's why it's driving me nuts? I'm done complaining now. Sorry for bothering you all with this topic.

Array Curious. Are you looking at the NACs for this coming year (2001-2002) or using this year's month/day date and applying to another year? All NACs are held over weekends, with the exception of the Summer Nationals. That said, the NACs will include a Monday or Friday or both. It won't ever have a Tuesday or Wednesday for an event day. None of the referees will ever go. -

Yeah, it's the monday fridays that would cause problems.

I missed roughly 1/10 of the school year this year, although 5 of those days were because I was sick. The other 13 days were all because of fencing. Yes, it's hard to skip that much school, but if you can show your parents that you make up the work and maintain an adequate average than that should be enough for them. My parents care first and formost about my grades, and while I couldn't quite keep the 95 average that they would like, I kept it high enough. If you can't convince your parents about that, most of the NACs are held over weekend where most schools give either the Monday or Friday off, and it's possible to get flights in the afternoon after school ("So, what are you doing after school?" "Going to Denver/Ontario, California/Kansas/whatever other godforsaken place they hold NACs").
Good luck on competing - Cadet NACs were a lot of fun
