Array I was always told "court shoes" were good - I never knew what the heck they were until recently and now I wear fencing shoes anyway. Court shoes are shoes for squash, volleyball, and I suppose indoor tennis which don't have a huge built-up sole but provide adequate support. -
i find that any flat soled sports shoes are good for fencing in. I used Hitec squash as they were very reasonable(cheap) and very strong, with good support. -

Array Head brand squash shoes are good, but at 60 USD, you might as well be looking at Adidas D'Artangnans, PBT, Viktoria, Victory (from BG) or Star Fighters.
They range from 20-40 dollars more, and you'd be getting a "purpose built" shoe.
In the meantime, any low soled athletic shoe should do. Avoid highly cushioned running shoes: the height will compromise ankle stability.

Array Wrestling shoes worked for me. You have a nice feel of the strip, and if you need extra cushioning in the heel, you can always put a heel cup in the shoe of the front foot (of course I never knew about those untill I got fencing shoes so I used cotton balls...ah, the good old days). -Sabresque

You want something cheaper than fencing shoes? How cheap are we talking? If you are a beginner, then tennis shoes, indoor soccer shoes, cross-training shoes, or basketball shoes are fine. -
low top Converse all stars... Chuck Taylors.... yeah -

Array Depends on how much you value your feet. Wrestling shoes are not designed for the stresses of fencing, and while I loved my Converse All-Stars when I was twenty I know better now. Heck, I even jogged in Keds back then, before Adidas and Puma came out with real running shoes.
Of course, I could be biased because I had to pay $### for orthotics (no coverage of them from most health plans) to deal with the various stress fractures and tendon damage caused by my athletic life.

Array i like the look of the adidas fencing shoes. very sexy.
it might look a bit pretentious ordering a pair of fencing shoes when i've only been in the sport for a few months though
