    Yea... Nice intro there, Shadow.

Welcome. What's your weapon? I take it you... like to flick.

I do all three but mostly epee now. I used to flick all the time in foil until the FIE killed my flick and all of my meaningful thinking man ripostes. Now I just lean forward and counter/remise a lot. Maybe I should just get a French foil and start pommeling. What do you think?

Just stick to whichever you prefer. Personally, I tend to use an italian grip in foil, but haven't tried it yet in epee.

You sound like you are a fairly new fencer. Are you learning how to fence from a classical minded coach? If so you might want to reconsider how realistic that is. Most coaches do not know how to teach the Italian game. The Italian game is very much about forceful binding and leverage shifting. Distance is crucial since there is almost no infighting with the italian.

New is a fair assumption to make. And no, my coach isn't classically minded at all, I just tried out the grip, and it seems to work better for me then a pistol grip.

Good for you. Atleast it was your choice instead of some coach trying to ego clone you. The Italian game is magnificient when played right.

Getting back to you: You mentioned FIE. Where do you fence at?

Perhaps you started fencing after the timing changes? The tip depression time has been increased and the lock out time after a touch has been decreased. I fence in America.

What exactly did the tip depression rule do?

the increase in the tip depression time will just merely mean that the tip of ur blade have to be on its target for a longer period of time( up to about 3 times longer if i remembered correctly). And to all old-timing foilists, it has been significant enough that most of the old-timing foilist have changed their style of fencing and used more point attack instead. However, the flick is still do-able at a correct distance and with enough strength on the flick. Though the decrease in the lockout time will mean you are prone to counter attacks when your blade is on the way to your opponent's shoulder or back.

and by the way it is not a rule, just a change in the timings in the electrical scoring box when a hit is registered.
