Array Wo-hoo!! Palm Springs, here I come (sorta') Unfortunately, I;m not going to go fencing in Palm Springs (unless I manage to pull out that D in foil tomorrow), but I passed the director's exam given by Derek Cotton and Larry Dunn and will be going out to test for my 5 rating in epee and foil. I didn't pass the sabre part of the exam.
Power! BWWhhaaaaaa. If you get a short, balding guy with glasses and a goatee who talks too fast, that'll probably be me.
Be gentle, it'll be my first time being observed -

Array I think you need the D by this weekend before you can go. Then again, you couldn't even send in your entries until you had a D in the first place, so I guess whether you get a D or not now is moot.
Still, I'd like to see you referee. We can always use more referees.
Now, I said I like to see you referee. I didn't say that I'd like to have you referee my pools
On the other hand, if Derek and others think you're ready, then you're ready. -

Array Congratulations, Sam! I'll look forward to seeing you. I'm there three days (and fencing at least two of those, but sabre only, so you don't have to put up with directing me!)
They changed the hand signals again? WHAT? I had just resigned myself to never remembering to do the FIRST set.
I passed the epee written test a few months ago (and have my sabre 5) but this year I pretty much decided I have to stop trying to combine refereeing and competition. -

Array Let's see if I remember the changes (I'm JUUUUUST got up for a tourney and my rulebook's out in the car.
I mentioned the change in Parry.
They've added a signal for an attack that fails. Basically, take the hand that indicates the direction of the attack, make like you;re sticking it in you ear and wave it away from yo a couple of times (ti differentieate it from the touch signal)
My brain's not working yet, so I don;t remember any other chages or additions.
Argh -
Sam- Are descriptions of the new hand signals available online anywhere yet? Seems the 2001 Athletes Handbook still showing same signals...
Thx -

Array "take the hand that indicates the direction of the attack, make like you're sticking it in your ear and wave it away from you a couple of times"
Oh, dear, I couldn't help it, I started making snorking noises at my computer when I read that. It sounds like the referee is trying to shoo away a stinging insect or possibly make a denigrating remark about the fencer whose action is being described . . . most of the referees I know just snicker and roll their eyes instead . . . which ear? The one on the side of the attacker or the one on the side of the defender? Or, given the typos, did you mean "rear?" Which would be even MORE apt. Oh dear, I'm going to go lie down now. -

Array Since my wife and sweet little daughter as work the last two NAC no mention of new hand signal to be used was made at the refrees meeting we must not be using them yet in the USFA.
Sam your testing will most likely be with the Vets. Since the FOC doesn't like to test new ones on Division One fencers.

Array Derek is the only ref I have seen use that hand signal for "parried", and this includes most of the usual sabre directors, so I daresay you can get by without using the new ones ( or any at all, for that matter, if the Sandy NAC was any indication )... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

I agree, but if I'm being observed, it behooves me to really play it straight and by the book. I made the arrengements today. I'll probably get a vet's event, just like Tim said. That means a Friday and a Sunday. Saturday's vet sabre, and I didn't pass that part of the test. -

Array You know, I don't for a minute doubt the possibility that Larry and Derek are playing a joke on you with some of the new "hand signals". All the FOC folks will have a good laugh. If Sharon Everson is there, she'll take you aside and tell you that your hand signals are all wrong (in all seriousness) and that you shouldn't do it this way, but should do it that way. -

Actually, the new signals were printed out and passed around. There were about 7 people in the clinic, so I doubt they'd set anyone up to look stupid on purpose.
Besides, I can always confirm them with Sharon or Gerry Baumgart when I check in.

I love the new graemlins. But you should see the ones in the forum section of the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps site. There are some that just a laugh riot! -

Array Sam,
One thing you need to be on the look out for in epee is air touches. Alot of the Germans tip are flakeing little pieces of chorme in the barrel causeing a AB Short therfore air touches. Allstars and Uhleman as switch manufactor now but alot of the old stuff is still out there.
About two years ago up in Seattle Nac they run a strip to test epee referee and my wife was one the fencer be us to test them. Talking about the nasty things I did to her epee for touches. Rig a switch then put a pieces of mental in the tip and half of them give her touches up in the air past the other fencers. I was very bad boy for that. Talking about fun though.
