Array Are you "Heavy handed" ? As the title says, do you fence heavy handed? In other words do you hit hard, or draw your arm back like your punching, or in sabre do you pull out the Hammer of Thor head swing?
I don't (AFAIK). Never had a comment that I've hit someone really hard (Unless i'm attacking and they move forward into it, stuff like that which I'm not really going to do much about).

Array Sometimes.................... The purpose of tactic is to conquer the enemy with proper war movements and actions.

In the rec tournaments that I started with we got carded if we hit even close to too hard. Trained us out of hitting hard very quickly. -

Array Better too hard than too soft. I tend to hit rather firmly, but not out of malice or whatever have you. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! Array I know a girl who is so incredibly heavy-handed (and slightly larger build) her nick-name is "rhino" (she'd even paw at the ground on the on-guard....not fun.) My bell-guard is almost bent in half at one place because it took a full hit from her. Talk about some sweet bruises and gashes coming from her. However, her heavy-handedness is her downfall, and victories are always more sweet, for it is "brain-against-brawn." -

Array No. I'm a little guy. If I had the gall to be heavy handed I'd have a bigger opponent swat me off strip some day.
That being said; I'm certainly not "too careful." The solution to your problem is to fence another weapon. -

Array I have been known to return blows with undue force against people who have hit me with undue force. Okay, and when I was a newbie one of my friends had a huge bruise on his forearm that was completely my fault. Perhaps this is why he's so good at retreating now.
I think sometimes I hit harder because I'm small and fencing men. Napoleonic complex and all that. Mais que diable allait-il faire,

I'm not sure I've every hit anyone hard in my life.
I'm more of a quite scoreboard pointer.
That said, a few crazy souls have hit themselves incredibly hard with my weapon. Take your time. Read carefully. -

Array It depends a lot on my opponent. If I am facing someone that fences with finesse, I will do my best to keep my game light and polite. If I am facing an aggressive, heavy-handed opponent, I am willing to play that game too. One test is worth a thousand opinions. Array I think I'm pretty even handed. Not too hard or soft. I haven't had any complaints either way. Though I can give as good as I take. -

We have a somewhat ham-handed fencer in one of my clubs, but in later stages of a competition, when he starts getting tired, he starts sitting low in guard, making tight blade actions, and fast, sharp parries with smooth soft ripostes....only he doesn't move much at all.
Now if we could just get the action at the end to have the energy of the beggining.!!!!
But I digress... I try to avoid hitting any harder than needed to set off the lights, I've still got at least 20 greenish bruise marks from the past 2 weeks of competition/practices.... beginners.....*sigh* -

Array I've certainly never hit hard enough to hurt me! -

Array The typical comment you'd get from anyone in my club if you complained about being hit too hard would probly be "Well, you should have parried..." The only way to atone for being occasionally a little over-dressed is by being always absolutely over-educated. -Oscar Wilde -

Array Depends on my opponent's perceptions, I guess, or maybe on his pain threshhold. I get occasional complaints from one guy in particular, but no one else ever seems to find me particularly hard-hitting. Maybe they just don't say anything. Still, I prefer to believe that the best answer is "no". An uncertain, qualified "no"... Similar Threads -
