| this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. We ARE fencers, we HAVE honor. Enough said, there is a reason for the things we do.

| What is this! A bad fencing movie from the 80's starring Pat Morita?
I can see it now: "Pop the mask! Flick the Joint! Sweep the Leg!"
"but I'll be disqualified"
"I said Flick the Joint!"
No.. I have never tried to hurt anyone while fencing. If anything, I try to keep heavy handed or of balance fencers from hurting themselves when they run into my blade bending it in a full circle.... I now have a 'drop' reflex when this happens.

| Hurt deliberately - no...
Humiliate, rip confidence to shreds - absolutely! What else is the classic sabre sequence of "make them miss, hit them, next hit on preparation as they take the extra step they needed" than an evil shredding of confidence. |

| I used to fight to hurt, but not anymore. I've been known to "repay" someone for hurting one of my team mates or friends though, but thats pretty much the extent of my brutality.

| I've tried to humiliate people in the past... But I try to do it by winning and making it look effortless. I think that's the best way.

| Usually it doesn't hurt enough to matter. If it does, it's generally unintentional, and saying something to the opponent will often fix things. If that doesn't, it's usually visible enough for the ref to see and punish.
In the absence of all of these things, you have to protect yourself. Or resign yourself to a week of training with tiger-patterned welts across your shins...in foil!
Note: I don't think I've ever seen this at a NAC, only weird Central NY events which bring bizarre pseudoclassicists and crazy backwater bandanna totin' Michigan-militia types out of their closet.

| i have done something like this in the past..if they repeated do something after i've said that it's not appropriate, i'll give a shot to the ribs or something similar just to get the point across. beating them just doesn't seem to do it. |

| Epee, three fleches ending in corp a corps from someone who wasn't wearing a cup, I discouraged him from a fourth... Dropped him to his knees. Legitimate touch, but looking back, one I'm not proud of. |

I don't think that one man should hit another man in the ben-wahs.
That's crossing the line.

| Intentionally hurt someone? No. Fenced hard against someone and destroyed them? Yes.
Worst two things I've done (other than the miscellaneous bruises by accident on someone) were:
a) When fencing saber years ago, extending my arm straight to have my opponent attempt a fleche with his mask right into my bell guard. Rang his chimes.. and he crumpled. No intentionally on my part, as I just put my arm out straight and he charged straight into it.
b) In foil, a guy who was fencing erratically did a fleche straight at me. I ducked my shoulder and put a counter block into him, ending up putting my shoulder right into his rib case. He flew off the strip and off his feet. Since I hadn't charged him, and he obviously didn't attempt to evade me when he charged at me, he got warned about brutality. |

| Well often when I fence noobs I see their eyes through their mask looking at my bellguard and waiting for me to strike so they can parry. That's when I slowly inch myself foward and pop the right in the mask. It scares the crap out of them.
I'm taling about foil by the way. |
