    CD's

Has anyone looked at the training CD's available here? Any comments?

I've got the épée ones. They look a lot like my son's training sessions with his coach, only the training seesions aren't as fast precise or disciplined. (My son's doing, not his coach's). This is not a surprise since his coach is a Ukranian, former Soviet coach.

They don't cover strategy much. The do cover the pedagogy of drills. My son's sessions are always deeply rooted in tactics and strategy. I'm sure Tyshler's are too, that's just not on the video.

The video files are much better if you have a good slo-mo full motion video viewer (FMV in our case).

The fencer in the drills is quite amazing. I think it's Andrei Chouvalov (sp?) an early 90s WC.

Got. The aggressive precision of the fencer is amazing, I agree. The guys seems like a pro, and I was very interested to see how incredibly dynamic the "lessons" are given by the coach (who is working his butt off).

I think the comment about lack of strategy is kind of correct, though the CD's breakdown the clips by increasingly complex tatical drills (without saying their applicability in terms of the competitor, the strengths or weaknesses of the actions, their applicability during different times in a bout, etc).

My viewer can only play them at speed or frame by frame. Slow mo would be good since the actions happen so fast, and you'd like to take the time to breakdown the coordination as it is happening. I did think that the tempo was clear to see; that is, you could see the on-time hits and counter-attacks in time.

If you've never seen world class epee talent, this is an eye-opener. It really helps me understand what to aim for (no pun intended). And for that reason, I found that it helps me integrate concepts from my training (my coach is ex-Russian national team, so there's alot of drilling in the tape that I can immediately relate to).

I think the $40 is worth it, if you can shell it out.

There's so much more that could be created for training fencers. This is a pretty impressive product all considered.

    Hey jspierre,

Who's your coach? My son trains with Yefim Litvan (Rutgers, C. Bayer, T. Bloom coach).
