good lord, i leave for three days and there's already 20 million stupid things going on.
slim, you found a french article on crime. you then said that france also has welfare. then, you said that welfare therefore causes crime.
you're wrong. or, at least, this article doesn't prove that you're right. (because i actually agree with your opinion.) -

Array A sign of things to come?
Here's one person's take on the situation in France.
"Its population is aging and retiring.
The new immigrants may provide an influx of young people, but what they need are EDUCATED, ENERGETIC and SKILLED young people. What they got instead are illiterate and sullen young thugs who collect welfare and riot if they feel disrespected.
There will come a point, probably soon, where the middle-class is no longer generating enough tax revenue to support the welfare state. Expect much more dramatic rioting then." -

Socialism can NEVER do enough! You cannot plan for EVERY contingency. It's the height of hubris to say you can plan for a majority of circumstances. That's why socialism is dying. I mean, can you believe the whole 'reason' that started these riots was that two of the scum were electrocuted while hiding from ID checks by the police? I say hold their gov check for a few months. Starve them out. Then send in the French troops to restore order. Shoot everything and anything that moves. The 'law abiding', if there is such a thing in that pit of welfare statism, citizens will stay home. There's probably some room left in Gitmo for these degenerates. Round them up, lock them up, throw away the key. Then they can get their 3 squares behind bars. By the time they see daylight, those infernal housing projects will hopefully have been bulldozed to the ground. They can return to what ever Godless country from which they came. The French people have enought to worry about with having to foot the bill for a bunch of Muslim welfare cases that are only pissed because they just didn't have enough to buy that Mercedes-Benz with the taxpayers' money that they recieve each month. Even French officials have commented on how Arab-Americans in communities like those in Detroit are much better integrated into US society than they've been able to accomplish.
Reminds me of Newark and Watts in 1968... I agree with Jeff. While on the one hand the French poke fun at the United States for our socioeconomic differences correlated with race, on the other hand, they don't collect census information based on race. No data = no problems.

Array Thanks Tomas., and you make a good point about their lack of census data.
Also, boys and girls, let's remember that a lot of these rioters are 2nd and 3rd generation residents of France because their parents came there from French colonial possessions. Not integrated into French society, they're not good at being French, and not good at being Moroccans or Algerians. Melting pot model in the US is a better model. Array So funny reading all this.
I've seen it before, from the french point of view.
I was in France shortly after the Rodney King riots, and the French asked me so many different questions...
Their theories ranged just like the ones on this forum:
A sign of the horrible job the US does of taking care of it's citizens
Blacks just being black
Poor racial integration
etc...
Oh, and to those that think that welfare causes crime, what a ridiculous notion. Crime has existed since the beginning of time. The Bible has two people in the world, and one of them kills the other.
Sorry, but by getting rid of welfare, liberal social policies, etc..., you won't be getting rid of crime. We're no threat, people, we're not dirty, we're not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
When the weather's fine,
We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea
We're always happy

Array By some reports the rioting is being coordinated via cellphones and the internet.
My question: how are chronically unemployed and destitute young men getting cellphones and computers?
France sounds like a pretty nice place to be chronically unemployed and destitute to me.
I am feeling a little bit of schadenfreude. Perhaps the next time some French governmental official or journalist is tempted to lecture the US about its immigration policy, its treatment of minorities, its crude social programs, its violence, etc. they will think twice.
But I doubt it. -

Schadenfreude isn't the most noble of emotions, but understandable in these circumstances, considering the lectures the French have been wont to deliver. I share Inq's reaction. Next time there's a lecture we'll have a quick rejoinder, I think. "In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are different." -
