| fencing vs. college ok. im having a problem because the college i really want to go to for teaching does not have a fencing club nor fencing near by.. unless im mistaken, the college is Kennesaw University in Georgia.
i could stay im my own town and go to a two year college and continue to fence or i could go to KSU and not fence as often...
im kind of obsessesed with the sport. (foilist, righty) |

It's not like there is much fencing in Georgia of Kentucky.

| You only get one chance to be a champion. You have forever to go to college. What club are you at?

| Is there any possibility of going somewhere besides Kennesaw State or your local community college? |

| Go wherever has the best teaching program, and start a club if there isn't one already. It wouldn't be that hard, for the most part.

im kind of obsessesed with the sport. (foilist, righty) | As an older person who has kids close to college age. I would say, you can go to college whenever. There is no need to enter college right out of highschool. It is almost BETTER to take a year or two and figure out what you really want to do.
I had a chance to talk to three truly upper level coaches. They agreed that college was death for a fencer. They lament that college ends the career of the vast majority of fencers they know and have trained for years.
If you really throw yourself into fencing for a couple years and see how you do, you won't have any regrets. You only have a young body when you are young. I assume you have serious intentions....
Find the best program you can, move there, find a menial job and train like crazy.
See what happens.

| Do what you feel you will be happiest with. Will your buddies go to college straight out of school? Being left behind sucks!
Right handed? Give up now Everyone know left handers are by FAR better fencers
I'm left handed and PROUD.

To be honest, i have already failed a year of high school. and all of my friends are already in college so i know what it feels like to be left behind. however this only strengthens my realtionship with fencing because it is all i have been doing in thier absence.
buy my family is super supportive of my fencing so i think i will take some time off and fence. thanks!

| Wow, you're a lucky one. I understand about the fencing vs. college deal as I'm an incoming freshman. Unfortunately, my parents are not support of my fencing at all, so I don't have that option to fall back on. I'd go with DFP's suggestion and go to the college of your choice and join up at AFC. Chances are, unless you're at a college with a reputable fencing team (or one with lots of money), you're not going to get the same training experiences as you would at a city-wide fencing academy. |

| Depends on what you want to get out of fencing and what you want to get out of college. If you've got the chance to be a national/international level fencer, but after college you plan on working at the local Blockbuster, then I'd say college can wait. The decision on whether to wait also depends on the type of school you're planning on going to and the type of career you plan on having. Being at a division 3 school, I'm always amazed at the price people are willing to pay for a couple of years of low-level athletic glory. Steroids, ruined knees, major operations to reattach body parts, underdeveloped social and intellectual skills, failing classes...all to be able to say that they started a college football game.

See what happens. | I agree with Mo. If you are able to do it, you will GET more out of college by maturing and being better prepared intellectually/emotionally rather than jumping right away. That might be the right answer for many people, but many are not ready... I can tell you that with certainty as I started at 15.

| I agree. Some of the coolest people I know at bryn mawr are McBride scholars- people getting their undergraduate degree later in life. They have a lot more perspective to offer, maturity in the community, and are often actually better students. It can be really hard to get back into school after taking time off (I'm told) but if you're taking classes at a community college you'll probably be fine.
Sounds like a good situation to me, actually.
I don't regret coming straight to bmc, but I do wonder how my experience would be different if I'd gone out into the "real world" for a year first, and I have no intention of diving straight into grad school after college.
