Array Only in NYC Only New Yorkers would complain about this.
=== Strong, Sweet Smell Reported in Manhattan

NEW YORK -- New York City has many odors, but when the city began to smell a little too good, New Yorkers became alarmed.
Residents from the southern tip of Manhattan to the Upper West Side nearly 10 miles north called a city hot line to report a strong odor Thursday night that most compared to maple syrup, The New York Times reported Friday.
There were so many calls that the city's Office of Emergency Management coordinated efforts with the Police and Fire Departments, the Coast Guard and the City Department of Environmental Protection to find the source of the mysterious smell.
Air tests haven't turned up anything harmful, but the source was still a mystery.
"We are continuing to sample the air throughout the affected area to make sure there's nothing hazardous," said Jarrod Bernstein, an emergency management spokesman. "What the actual cause of the smell is, we really don't know." "What did I tell you about being stupid? You don't get a birthday this year." -
You'd be surprised how sweet some esters smell.
....and breathing in lung fulls won't do you any good. -

Array Well, the smell came and went then came back again overnight. Must be blowing in from Jersey. Maybe the guys in black helicopters set off a syrup bomb to simulate the effects of a dirty bomb. Or perhaps it's just that our air is so clean at last, that the natural smells of autumn are being noticed by noses unaccustomed to them? Just because you have the right, that doesn't mean it is right. -

Array Nothing "sweet" blows in from Jersey. As I remember, the whole state is a bit ripe. -

My friends and I smelled whatever it was last night on the upper west side. We thought it was something weird, but local. Then in the subway, one guy kept making a big deal out of it and kept asking people who got on at different stops if they smelled anything weird "out in the upper world." We were pretty surprised when people getting on at every single stop reported smelling maple syrup or burnt sugar. -

Array Oh my God. I was just smelling this in my room (in the upper west side... if you want my exact address, PM me ). It is SO weird, I am amazed at how strong it is. And even weirder is that it comes and goes very quickly. I have no idea what the hell it was, and trust me, it's worth complaining about. It's a sickly sweet smell, well, like maple syrup. If you were in my room, you'd understand. It's just too weird not to complain about. "What, really? I thought that song was just about a dragon who lived by the sea and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee."
"Dan, you're such a dumb*ss"
