Recruit new fencers- The Legend of Zorro this weekend

Ok, if you run a fencing club and are looking to get some more people involved in fencing here is a great opporunity to let people know in your area that there is a place to learn how to fence. We are going to six different movie theaters in the area for the demos. We did them for Kingdom of Heaven and Episode III. If you are looking for some hints:

    1. Call the theater and ask who the manager is.
    2. Stop by the theater and ask for the manager by name and introduce yourself and your group.
    3. Let them know that you would like to do free demo and let people try fencing out for free ( this is important because they will think that you are looking to sell something to them not add value to the movie theater at first.)
    4. Tell them you would bring all the fencers and the equipment.
    5. Make sure to bring flyers and/ or business cards.
    6. Make sure one of the fencers is there to hand out flyers and answer questions.
    7. Have the people fence one of your fencers, don't let them fence with one of the their friends

    Good luck

"Do you think by making someone a knight, you make them a better fighter?"
    "Yes"

We did this for Die Another Day and it was quite successful. The theater recently asked us about doing it for Zorro, but then changed and wants it for the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia instead -- this film apparently has a scene where someone's being instructed on how to use a sword. And I think it'll be a good audience for potential fencers.

Incidentally, if you're a USFA club, you'll want to get an "additional insured" policy for the movie theater ... it'll cost you $25 (I think?), and the theater will be much happier and more likely to welcome you if they know you and they are insured against any problems.

If I recall correctly (which isn't guaranteed), additional insured are now free. I seem to remember Michael Massik mentioning it somewhere I was in the past few months, perhaps at Coaches College. I'd suggest dropping an email to the National Office (Dana?) and seeing what the current requirements are.

    Chronicles of Narnia

Yes, we are booked for these also. They are really expecting this movie to go over big. We are going to be there for 2 weekends in a row. We will upload pictures of the demo up for people to see on Monday. Chronicles of Narnia may have the same big push that we saw for the 3 musketeers back in 1993.

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

You've always been able to add a bunch of additional insureds at no extra cost when you renew your club membership, but at any other time it's been extra.

If it's true that it's no longer the case that it costs more at other times, that's great. However, just this past August we had a new community center client begin barely two weeks (maybe less) after we renewed, and we had to pay extra.

As mentioned, I could be mis-remembering, but my recollection was that the statement was explicitly about adding additional named insured at a date other than when the original forms were filed.

    Possible options:
    1) I'm mis-remembering what was said
    2) What was said was in error
    3) You were charged in a case when you shouldn't have been
    4) The policy changed between when you paid and when I was told of the change
    5) I was told of a change with an effective date in the future, with said date after when you paid
    6) Probably a whole bunch of other possible explainations that I can't come up with right now

I don't (currently) deal with either clubs or insurance, so it hasn't been important enough for me to track what the exact current status is and I have no (current) direct experience. If there are questions about what needs to be done and/or costs, I again suggest bumping the questions up to the National Office for official answers.
