| blech... When fencing, fence. When knife sparring, spar. Don't try to mixthe two by limiting the knife work. One arm only? There are some good knife tournaments out there.. mostly run by various Filipino schools of companies like Cold Steel. I'm thinking about running one in early spring. There's no need to act like this garbage is new or really interesting

| I think it is kind of a cheap shot to associate this with classical fencing--there are people, like Chris, who train classical fencing or western martial arts, or whatever you want to call it, very seriously, and don't engage in bashing sport fencing.
I hate to say it, but the attitude of the guy in the story, with the see-through masks, and the desire to get into the Olympics, has more in common with our governing body than with either the SCA or classical fencing.

| Does Roche know about this? Maybe it can become the new foil? They just have to get set up for wireless scoring ... they already have those lovely telegenic visors!

MR | You're not alone. As soon as I read that part of the story, the first word in my mind was, "Roche." |

| can you imagine... have to get your allstar knife, which would have to be electric (scoring) I suspect Lames would be used to register the cut is the head target? yes well then you'll need a lexan mask. what will the knife length be? 6" how long of a handle? can the handle be angled to fit a particular style? width of the blade? can you score with the flat? (a big piccadillo for me in sabre...) as much as I admire the pluck to try and invent a new sport.. it's more likely we would see synchronized skateboard jumping before this...
good luck |

| "Also he maintains that it is not knife fighting techniques that they are teaching, but rather fencing. Only one hand can be used, the other held behind your back or at your side. Also they instruct the students on the basic tenets of the martial arts: peace, respect and honor.
“This is not the place to learn knife fighting, but we do make sure everyone we train is sane and coming in with the right mindset,” says Chu."
You know, when swords were still a fashion accessory, and dueling was still justice, salles all over Europe said the same kind of thing. Same song, different blade.

| I had a similar idea to these guys some years back. I mean, it was just like this with one arm behind the back, protective chest plate and mask... only instead of knives I was going to use cucumbers. It was called Cucumber Fencing and I really thought it had a good shot at making it to the olympics some day. I'm still not sure why it never caught on.

| Have you ever seen a real cucumber fight? It's rough, man. Obvoiusly nobody wants to endorse a sport that promotes vegicide & teen vegtable abuse. |

We'd use flexible cucumbers with a button on the end to register hits. Of course, we often ran into the problem with overly flexible cucumbers, where people would whip them over and try to hit their opponents on the back. This completely sucked since in a REAL CUCUMBER FIGHT that would never occur. Still, we figured that adjusting the timings on the cucumber buttons would have helped... and, make cucumber fencing more telegenic! But still, after all our efforts simplifying the cucumber fencing rules we never got it on TV. Damn shame that was.
