| (Wrist) Shot of the Day Working on images from Leipzig and thought everyone would enjoy this shot of Flessel (FRA) and Hormay (HUN) from the women's team epee finals.
Enjoy!

| Thanks ... will do as I can ... most will get posted to fencingphotos.com when I get them edited. The individual shots are up and I'm currently scrambling to get all the team images done and sent to Escrime for their next issue.

| Funny picture.
I can't begin to explain how hard it is to hit Hormay in the hand.
Her wrists/arms are super thin.
Thanks for the picture.

| One More OK, you guys convinced me. Here's one more shot -- this was Flessel's flashy final touch to win the gold for women's team epee.

Serge | Nice shot. I wonder if there's a vid anywhere, I would love to see it in motion.

| This makes me wish we had staff photographers at tournaments. My lack of photography skills and digital camera can only do so much. |

| To a great degree, the venue and how it is lighted and structured makes a huge difference in my ability to obtain good images. It's tough to get cool fencing shots with a lot of background clutter. The big venues where I shoot most often have a very staged finals strip with overhead lighting and a darkened background and audience. The only venue like this that I've seen in the U.S. has been Duel in the Desert, which is really where I was able to develop a technique that ultimately sold my photographic style and perspective to the FIE.
That's also why you don't see me doing too many photos at events such as U.S. nationals -- they don't set up a finals piste in a manner condusive to high-contrast photography (or videography, for that matter).
I do have an article in the upcoming American Fencing about how to shoot digital fencing images that some of you might find interesting and useful.
All my images are digital, BTW. |

Serge | To be sure, that's a very nice picture and all. But I think I should point out, just because I re-watched this bout today and happened to recognize it. The action depicted in the picture does not score the touch. It is not a perpendicular wrist touch as it looks. Rather it's either an attack, or counter-attack from Flessel that falls a bit short to the belly, the blade then slides along hormay's jacket and lights up. The duck and pulling back of the blade depicted in the picture is just a continuation of the action.
It would be a pretty sick touch, but in this picture the touch has already happened.

| I rarely know if the touch was good or not because I'm ususually shooting multiple frames a second. When I get a good shot, I can't see it because the mirror is up ... so I typically only see the good images later when I'm reviewing the photos. By then I don't know if it was a good touch or not ... |
